Hi everyone. I've been reading this forum for a few months now but just finaly got around to registering. Here's a building I just pretty much finished. I'd apreciate any comments on how to make it better or what I should think about in the future. It was made for fun in XSI. There's about 600,000 polys in this scene.

How do you make the file apear in the post? I like that better than clicking a link.

If you want to just post a pic, push the Browse button and select the image. It has to be under 50k though.

:surprised Wow. thats an awesome picture. All i can say is maybe lower the diffuse on that tree, it looks a little too lit up. But thats a great image.

oh, the bottom most link works, the one you have to type in.

Great modeling, texturing, etc.
The lighting needs more work though. It looks too simple. The apartment all seem to be lit evenly. Have some dark spots, some lit up spots, and especially use different colors. I only see one light color in this whole image, which is naturally impossible.
My advice for the general lighting is just look for photos of scenes similar to your picture, just to get the "real feel"
Good luck!

Cool thanks guys. I'll try messing with the lights tomorrow and I'll post it again if I make some improvment.

I got a chance to redo the lights. I mostly just darkened the back a good amount. Do you think this looks better? What else could I do to improve it? Thanks again!

for some reason I can't get a link to work so please copy and paste the link. I'll try to look for another place to put up pictures that might be a little nicer.

Sweet, I figured it out. I know it's a pain to have to copy and paste so here it is.

I think its cool E.Z., right when I looked at it I thought of apartment buildings back east. Is it based off of a real building.

good job EZ.
Do you have GI capability? I think it would look even better if you added a faint dark blue light to the whole scene, IF the sky is clear. GI would do the job but you can fake it too, it would give it the real night feeling.
Looking great

hmmmm, dunno.

Textures look too bitty and bumpy. all the stone work looks too dirty and weathered too. the street lamps just wouldn't glow and illuminate like that,l especially causing those strong edg-ed shadows. the DOF dont work and what's up with that sky?

sorry :(

Hey STRAT, could you elaborate on some of those a bit? What do you mean too dirty and weathered? It's an oldish building outside. I see what you mean about the lights. I thought the glow was too much and I didn't really notice the hard shadows. Now that you mentioned it they do bother me, especially the one on the door in the middle right. I'll try softening them a bit. Could you explain what's wrong with the dof and the sky?

dgpilot, I'll try adding some more blue to it. I tried a tiny bit, but it's barely noticable.

telecaustic, I started making the door, balcony and stairs on the right, from a picture, then just built the rest. Not from a real building.

Thanks everyone! :)

stone textures - every peice of your stone mapping looks anciant, very old and worn giving the whole image a dirty look which is too strong. atleast tone it down a tad.

DOF - again, way too strong. giving the image a small scale 'table top model' effect rather than a photorealism look. either make it barely noticable or remove it completely.

Sky - fairly obvious i think

Ok I got ya. I will take into consideration the old looking stone. I actually like the 'table top model' look. I don't know why. Perhaps the image will look better with less DOF though, I'll see how I like it. Thanks for your critiques!
