yeah its composited. I took that picture in maine... So i tossed the dragon in it.

And yes.. Draco is the huge inspiration behind the dragon. I figured since Draco is dead... why not bring him back in a some what similar and younger form :)

Very nice. I like dragons.

You can tell pretty easily to get the grass in front you just erased the dragon layer to show the grass from behind. :p

Thats not really a critique, just telling you its the first thing i noticed.

Btw, inspirational texturing job..

The Dragon is cool and textures perfect !
The colors are also great and he is blending perfectly in the background.
I feel the wing should be attached somewhere near the shoulder...i guess.

Incredible... love the textures, expression, the grass... have no crits whatsoever. Is it rigged yet? :)

Jackie_Chan_Fan
01-28-2004, 08:15 AM
yeah its rigged.. face is all rigged with a muscle bone like system.

technically the wing is mounted on the shoulder... That skin above the shoulder moves with the wing arm like a colar bone would.

As for the grass.. I didnt erase the dragon... I stamped in grass over the dragon ;)

Thanks guys... All of those scales proved to be a major skinning pain in the ass. And hes still not perfect.. but i like it.

Theres also ambient occulsion and subscattering going on in that pic.

Oh wow, I dont ussually post, im one of those "Look N Go" types, but I must say this is truely amazing work. What caught my attention was the use of uniqe colors that you dont ussually see on dragons, and I must say it works so well. Keep up the good work man, you should really enter this in Expose 2, I would love to see it.

Nice model. I like how even though it could be modelled as a younger Draco, this dragon still has a very mature and ageless character. Dragons are beyond wisdom, you show this, even in its younger form. Lovin it

i have to agree, this model is incredibly well done, there's a great deal of talent you have for rigging/modelling/texturing.

I do, however, dislike the image as a whole. The profile and pose does not do this model justice. Maybe if the camera were pulled back a tad it would work better; the feet and tail seem cropped too close. Of course the grass and background is nice to look at too, but it feels like a display of everything you can create well, and nothing more. Where's the love? Did this go through the evocative thread at all?

I do understand if you're more the technical type and not some much artistic, but you should really try to make something more of your piece.

Jackie_Chan_Fan,

I have to say this is the nicest 3d character/image I have seen in some time. Well done. The only thing I'm not so keen on is the way he seems to be walking through the grass. As a dragon I would think he would be walking on all fours rather than two? Either way, awesome work!

02-03-2004, 09:59 AM
wonderful little dragon ... and I agree that this looks lot like a very young draco .. and realy cute one
Also you're lighting is prefect though you could have work
a little more on the compositing.

one thing that bug me though is the coverplates on the tale .. some of the edges seem to overlap with the dragon skin.

other than that I really like your picture ..

keep it up

minor personal fancy - I'd like to have seen some 'bump' actually on the blue skin patches like they're sorta more fungal or puffy than scales but raised from the surface softly...

the modelling is absolutely delicious though.

very nice use of colour. nice detail especially with the hands and shoulder area. Not sure about the tail and the scaling at the rear but i guess you've looked at that...

Couple of questions regarding the wings, how is the wing skin attached relating to the body? by the shoulder joint area it looks like its hanging free, will it be attached in some form and how?

and also a wire would be really nice!

Nice work!

Thanks to all for the nice comments :)

I'll address some of the comments here...

BUT FIRST.. since a handfull of folks wanted to see him animated...

(Here is a test animation i did. Its very crude and unrefined. I'm not that bad of an animator ;) )

http://www.3dluvr.com/rogueldr/movies/dragontest01.avi

(This is a test of his facial controls and his wings. The facial animation is just a run through some of his poses i defined)

http://www.3dluvr.com/rogueldr/movies/dragonwing.avi

(this is his facial rig)

http://www.3dluvr.com/rogueldr/movies/dragon_facial_rig.avi

As for composition of the shot. It is really not a finished image. I wanted to put together a nice still of the dragon in an environment and light it.

There is an overall animated short story to this that i've written and thought out but nothing more. I havent done any animation yet. And i'm not sure i will due to time and complexity. I was at some point thinking of doing the short with an entirely different dragon, a more cartoony one that is easier to work with and get away with :)

The face is entirely rigged for animation, as is the body. He's some what ready to go.

The scales. This comes into the rigging :) Its a nightmare! The scales on the tail are pretty tricky so yeah theres a scale or two that go through the skin slightly. I could have fixed it for the still... but in an animation i dont think you would notice it.

 yeah is pretty cool great texturing, the modeling of the head reminds me of that model from dragon heart the movie. The only thing i can crit would have to be the lighting and that image plane .

this is amazing...
will it be animated? *edit
Geez... I almost missed all those animation links... this is great.

My only crit (if any at all) is that you might want to play around a little with the colors of the back ground to make it as bright and colorful as the 3D you have there... unless you just put the BG there really fast...

great work!

Jackie_Chan_Fan

:) Howdy FaceMan :) Yeah been a while.

For those that dont know, i started modelling that dragon in max 2.5 :)

it has since gone through maya and softimage.

It has been textured atleast 3 times now completely from scratch each time.

Also to the person who mentioned Dragon Heart 2 :) If you take a look at that absolutely criminal sequel... you'll see how terrible the work is on that film. ick.

Such a disservice to a great dragon character. They went from Phil Tippet on Dragonheart 1, to Phil Nobody on Dragonheart 2.

Hi Adam,

I remember that model. It has to be at least 3-4 years old! I remember looking through your images directory a long time ago when I visited your site for your, then very popular, cartoon eye tutorial. I was so impressed, having then just started out modelling characters. Thanks again for that eye tutorial, it's still one of my favourites. :)

I agree that the environment and composition needs some work, but that model is fantastic!! The only real criticism that I have is for the texture on the wings. It looks a little spotty and underdeveloped compared to the detailed textures on the rest of the body. It could use some translucency too, perhaps. ;D

Take care, and keep up the good work. I hope to see more!

Erin Nicholson.

Symphony

Simply amazing texturing.

Jackie_Chan_Fan
02-03-2004, 07:41 PM
yeah i gave up on the wing transluceny :) I was going to do it, but it wasnt looking too great because of the boney arm structure looking odd against the translucent areas of the wing. The solution perhaps is to make the tips of the wing arms transparent as well... but... whatever i made the decision to just leave it out.

And yeah that dragon geometry is pretty old now. But it has been reworked a bit here and there. Like i said it has been mapped 3 times now :) And now finally rigged etc.

And i have worked some on the geometry etc.

Glad its in a nice still picture. I had to do somethign with it. :)
