View Full Version : Lightwave Deformers ??
Whistler2k 06-26-2002, 06:25 PM Hi!
OK, I`m still figuring out whether to get Lightwave or Maya.
I like Lightwave`s workflow far more, but I`m wondering ...
Maya has Deformers I find pretty useful. Such are: Wrap deformer -> Wrap a low poly object around a HiPoly to move the mesh (seems not so important if you can animate subpatches)
Cluster -> Define part of a mesh as a cluster and perform stuff with it ...
Jiggle deformer -> get secondary motion out of motions ...
Lattice deformers -> put a control cage around the object ...
well and a lot other useful stuff for animation! Has LW similar suff in some way??
Would be interested in some feedback!

Depend of where u think to do the deformation - in modeling process or during some animation?
If u need this deformers onley in modelling u ahve lot of them exept wrap i thing (but no sure).
U can define clusters - in modeller and save them to use in Leyaut (pointselection sets, parts, V maps) , some deformers like Inertia can use weight maps or Motion Desighner can use parts.
Jiggle deformer -> get secondary motion out of motions ...
can u deskribe this better?
Lattice deformers -> put a control cage around the object ...
damn i need this so mach - i found some old plugin for LW5.6 but this dont work with 7.5 :annoyed:
Wrap deformer -> Wrap a low poly object around a HiPoly to move the mesh (seems not so important if you can animate subpatches)
Yes, u can animate sub pathes via morphing
As u see LightWave is not suited like Maya- integration of modeller in leyaut will be wellkom...
But Maya sucks on ather tasks:
rendering,
surfacing;
poly modeling (did u know what LightWave was used for modelling of Final Fantasy ?)
Bdw. all this deformers u have on Cinema 4D - all animatible and interactive.
Good luck and sorry for bad english.

Check that thread I posted the link to, it has a movie of this sucker in action, the low rez sheet is driving the animation of the chainmail. Softbodies and Wrap deformer all in one.

Yes, I mean for animation!
Right, Maya is a charm for animation, but I love Lightwave for its renderer and modelling tools! I think Maya was not even designed to have subD stuff ....
That`s why I ask! I want to know how much animation comfort can be achieved with LW!!

As u wrout Maya is a charm for animation i think u can get the same result in LW - u jast need better usage of your braine :)

Also 7.5 have been greatly enhanced on the anim part.
Motion Mixer works like a charm.
We (I) are also expecting a lot of 8 version, so stay tuned !

Yea i waiting for 8 too.
To be honest i thing what XSI is the better weapon (just resived the training CD's - wow its so cool)

I ordered the Demo CD for XSI 2 times and they didn`t ship it. Maybe they consider me unimportant ... anyway, they`re out of the race.
So I guess it`s gonna be LW, even if it doesn`t have as much animation features. Did anyone use Messiah:Animate?? Is it as good as they say?
Does anyone know of good LW animations on the net? I mean real good facial and character stuff. I know it`s great for static stuff like Starships and stuff, but my concern is character animation!

I worked on both of those, they are both done with LW 6.5 and no plugins. (ie: messiah). And LW 7.5 is way more powerful in the character animation department compared to 6.5.......

PS: Facial, post a link of your avatar moving. :)

Mike RB is right... Lightwave have all the tools in one package to do what you need for character animation.
It feel you need an alternative choice and different tool set, Then Messiah:Animate is awesome solid Character animation tool (never lacking).

Yes, with pleasure :

Done with 6.5 or 7.0B, not sure. Facial expression done with a set of endomorphs mixed together, the head and neck are boned.
Whistler2k, what do u want to do with your future 3D app?

Thank`s for your replies ...
Well, I`ve worked with max so far, as animator for a UT mod.
What I want to do now is realize a short I have in mind for a long time now. It features a lot of character animation as well as inside and outside environment and vehicles.
So I aimed for LW as I like its modelling, texturing, it`s rendere and so on. Just not sure on character stuff ... well, I`m Downloading the movies on the links you gave me and we`ll see! ;-)

Wow guys, now that convinced me! That was what I`m looking for .. something cool done in LW that shows it`s capable of good animation.
Thanks!
Seems like there is a new LW user ;-)
So can anyone advise a good book about LW animation?
Excellent overall book on Lightwave:
Inside Lightwave 7 (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0735711348/flaycom/002-6483829-8036028) by Dan Ablan
Superior animation book using Lightwave:
Lightwave 3D 7 Character Animation (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1556229011/ref=pd_sxp_elt_l1/002-6483829-8036028) by Timothy Albee
Good luck. Look forward to seeing the short! :)

Don't know about other books...
but I love Lightwave 3D 7: Character Animation by Timothy Albee
it goes into some of the basics of animating with lightwave, but its real strength is how the book shows how to give great performance and character with your animations, something I think people really overlook.
If you're just learning lightwave, you'll need the manual to go along with the book.
Just my 2 cents.
