View Full Version : Environment 2D: Nostalgia
I have been working on this image for several days now. It is a painted version of one of my drawings. I was planning to submit it to Exposé but now that it is 80% finished I just hate it.
I feel so frustrated that I have abandon it. I have painted and repainted it but I don’t like it and I don’t know where to take it next.
This is my first illustration with Painter 8 and even though it is not finished yet, the thing that bothers me more, besides the color scheme, is that the image doesn’t look clean I don’t know if I make any sense.
Anyway C & C more than welcome. Right now I only hope to learn something from this mistake.

I personally think that this image has a lot of potential. The only problems I see are obviously the fact that the background isn't done. More importantly, 99% of the image is the same color temp. I think the focal point of your image should be a warmer color than the background, I like the gold of the man's skin and it could work very well, you just need to help the viewer focus on him. Maybe add a bluish-grey tone to the sky and buildings, not only will that help push them further into the background but it will give your audience a sense of mood.
Also, you might try showing the outlines you have via changes in color...show us the mass by using shadow and highlights. I'm specifically talking about the birds and the railing on the main building...see what you can do by taking out those solid black lines.
As far as anything "unclean" about the image, the only parts I see are the left sleeve, the art on the main building, and the general detail in the leftmost building.
You're doing great though, I would really like to see you reconsider your abandonment of this piece...I think most artists hate their masterpieces by the time they finish.
Keep it up,
David Bickley
Thanks, David, for your kind words. I agree with everything you have just said. I always have problems trying to get rid of contour lines when I'm painting. I have to practice a lot more in order to show volume with color, shadows and lights as you well said.
I also agree about changing the background color scheme in order to separate the planes. Is there an easy way in Painter8 or in Photoshop to recolor an image without painting it again. I have tried painting in a new multiply layer but I just can make the background color colder. Anyone here knows a trick to do so? And please excuse me if this is a very obvious question.
Thanks again,

Ruso,
If you painted the background on a separate layer, then you can try changing the color balance in photoshop. It's under Image>Adjustments>Color balance.
Hope that helps!

In order to change the color you shoul create a new layer and paint a solid color (blue for example) over the areas you want to change. Change the layer style to "color" and if you don't like the color you chose, use hue/saturation to find one that looks right
hey, great tips. Thank you, guys!!!
