Im modelling a cartoon snail for my final year project at uni, and I want to give him a beard, here's a pic of the model so far...

Im not sure whether a modelled beard would look that good, or should I experiement with using hair for it, Ive never used hair before so dont really have a clue how I would go about doing it.
I just want a big fluffy father christmas style beard and moustache, any advice on creating this?
Thanks

A couple of ways I can think of depending on your level of skill and how close your camera will be.

You can opt for a hair only solution which will probably become a bit tedious and slow.

A hair & texture map solution where you apply a texture map of a beard and apply hair on top of that.

Mesh modeled to be the beard.

Mesh like above with subtle displacement.

Mesh like above with alpha maps for transparency.

or

A little bit of all the above :)

Good Luck,
