The two best things for modeling rocks is free form deformer and displacement maps

Have you seen Ice Age ? Your way to modeling at this step make me think of their way to design the rocks. I would be happy to know how the work for the rocks. Really cool design (did they code a tool for some of the rocks? What type of surface they used? What is the polygons definition of their rocks? What about the dark shader? ) If you've some infos :)
