View Full Version : How do I convert back to polygon after subD?

How do I revert back to the original polygon model after I had converted it to subD? I know I can always undo, but what if I ran out of undos. In 3dstudio max, it's as easy as switching between the mesh smooth tool and the object. Is there a similar tool in Maya where it subdivides the polygon model in preview mode so you can see how it would look and easily go back to polygon mode?

I think you set your divisions to 0 or possibly 1.... then delete history and you'll have a polygonal model... at least this is how I do it.

convert subds to poly with vertices and level 0 as settings

That's great it works, but damn, that's a lot of work compared to Max. I only want to edit the subD and back to poly.:hmm:

Toggle between proxy modes:
RMB on the Sub-D model, and a marking menu will appear for sub object selection. In the bottom right of the marking menu is polygon. This switches you back to the origional poly and you can manipulate it.
To switch back to sub-D just RMB over the model again and where you picked polygon before will now be replaced with sub-D.

But with the wireframe of the subD and polygon visible at the same time makes it hard to view. Not only that, but in proxy mode, moving the vertices of the proxy is so slow and impractical for me. I wonder if having a wildcart video card will make a difference or if it's all cpu. I have a Duron 700 mhz and a Geforce DDR card.

To ease in viewing while still in the Sub-D proxy....... toggle the smoothing of the model using either the 1-2-3 or 2-3-4 keys.
This will change the LOD (Level Of Detail)

As for the Video card....Yes your display is probably suffering from the gForce card. (We only runthose on the render farm since they are cheap.) For a work machine the Wildcat is definitely better. We have several of them, but I prefer the Oxygen GVX420. It has 128 mg of ram onboard and can handle quite a bit more. Same company makes it as the wildcat ....www.3dlabs.com
Give them a shot.

from my experience subd's are always a little slow, hopefully it'll be fixed in 4.5. also, don't delete history on your proxy, because it'll disconnect the polygon from the subd, and you'll have to reconnect it with the connection editor (or convert it to poly then back to subd).

you can delete history on the proxy (your going to want to) w/o killing the conex to the polyToSubdiv (i think its a protected conex).
