Dinos. That's the theme of this session running until friday 30 january.
You can do the whole body or focus on certain parts.
1-3 hours models, ref searching, concepting, shading, rendering not included.
Show wires, different views, tell how long it took and what soft you used.

Have fun!

No, He was reading my WALL! hehe! let's show you what I have had on my wall, in front of my PC, since a few years ago:

http://ilasolomon.topleftpixel.com/Temp/dinos.jpg

and now which one should I pick to model? (though I've two cartoonish concepts ready to make! :) a T-rex and a Triceratops.)

I think shading is more important than modeling in this theme, bumps, displacements, textures, but I'll do...

:)

Good luck

well I didn't make the Robot one on time so I'm up for this one.

I had never done that much poly modelling untill the robot, and I certainly never did a speed session, so I can't wait to see how this one goes..

Let the FUN begin!!:bounce:

Well, starting out I thought "what have I gotten myself into!?" but it came out amazingly well. I'm pretty happy with it for 3 hours. Here you go:

3 hours
Maya 5.0.1:

http://www.rit.edu/~mjd6897/whiterabbitdinosaur.jpg

Any comments or questions very much welcomed. I also saved in increments if anyone has a desire to see step by step, as sometimes is requested. I'll put together an animated GIF if requested.

Fellah: Very cool man!

roguenroll: Also very nice for the time alotted. I imagine it would be hard to get that form correct in only a few hours.

Everyone's are coming out more incredible than I could have imagined!

[edit] Btw, Jurassic Park makes for excellent viewing material while working, if you have a second comp or tv around your desk.

Here is my attempt.

http://www.gackland.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Dino%201.jpg

1 hr 45 min work including texture lighting rigging (just for the tongue), posing and render time. Oh, this also includes de- installing Animation Master, wiping the registry, re-installing and setting my preferences back (I am using an alpha version of version 11 allthough I don't know why, v10.5 would have done the job and wouldn't have caused me any jip)

She was modelled in 1 hour 15, then I did a few renders and noticed some stuff that I had to change. This added about 10 mins if you don't include the fact that I accidently duplicated all the teeth leaving them in the same position as the old ones and I had to go through deleting them making sure that I left the orrigionals. Less haste more speed I guess.

And the wire

http://www.gackland.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/dino%20wire.jpg

Edit: Oh, I didn't use references so I don't know how anatomiaclly correct she is. I think I anthropomorphised her a bit but hey.

NURBS aren't dead, but they aren't used all that much anymore as far as I know. NURBS also take a lot longer to model in, so you will see mostly polygon stuff on these speed modelling things. I find NURBS to be very useful for architectural and whatnot still, but for organic it has too many problems when the only real downside to polys these days is having to lay out UVs, but that can take far less time than stitching nurbs together.

Neat thing, this thread-based "speed modelling." 3 hours is just right, too - you're trying to keep a fast pace yet you still have a chance to make something decent looking (if you're lucky).

This was 3 1/2 hours (d'oH!) in MAX. I thought I was doing alright on time 'til I went into Tweak phase...

I have made it for a speed session on a irc channel the mini session how we call on the channel was 1 hour session the theme of the session was a flinstone dinossaur so i did this one.
Well as the speed session here has a range of time i decided spend a lil time on it and fixed some parts of the dino.
It took about 2:30 to do everything i was not really on a freaky speed :
Also i would give a opnion about it. I think yes its cool but there are no way to know if people lie about the time to look like the great and fastest modeler maybe it doesnt happen or do i dont know and this is the worst part of making a speed session on a forum. just my tought.
I am not saying that people cant do great job in 3 hours because i know it can be done. just focusing attention on some problems on making a speed session on a forum.

This is no challenge. No winner, no prizes, etc.. We don't care if people "lie" . People are free to come, send 10 hour models and (faintly, and sadly) inflate their ego by receiving comments like "d00d , you r000000lz how u did that in t3h 3 hourz l1m1t 11!!!" , if that makes their days happier, cool for them.

This forum is for fun, and most of all, to give motivation and to make you improve. If you lie, you won't. And the "competition" here is not against the others, but against yourself.

Have fun !

I was just making a point. because this is almost a tradition on our comunity and is clear like u say that may be some of that things going on.
As one of the greatest forum in the web i just think ur distorcing the purpose of the speed session.
That way, why dont u call chrono session, so people wont have to lie too much.
Hope u understand what i am trying to say.

Hello,
This is my fictitious & goofy looking dino, no references were used for this. I modeled straight from imagination & recollection of general animal anatomy (Hopefully it looks decent). Speed Modeling is rather new for me so within a 3 hour time frame what I wanted to do was rough out the entire body as complete as I could.

Hot Damn southern!! :O :applause:

looks like I'm going to HAVE to play with Z-Brush sooner or later. It would have saved a lot of time on my dino :(

well here's mine!! three hours!! O_O;;; I had a lot of trouble with the mouth wrinkles. Please excuse the shoddy texture and lighting job.. I'm very tired now... >_<

It's a carnotaurus. I love these dinos...

southern: that's awesome. What material did you use for the dino?
I'm always having problems selecting materials. And how exactly did you get those fine wrinkles working? and those little bumps..

I just don't know why, but I can't do that kinda stuff in Zbrush.

Managed to squeeze off another one this morning in a little under three hours. I textured it later and that was about another hour.

Funny thing is, I used reference from a DK book on Dinosaurs and I only just noticed that it is a `Giant SOUTHERN Lizard` or (Giganotosaurus) which is pretty cool as I didn't know I had one named after me. :)

ps. btw, my name `isn't` Giganotosaurus

Here's my dinosaur head. This took about 2 and a half hours to do. Modeling was slow because, unlike my previous couple of speed session posts where I began with extruded/subsurfaced cubes, this mesh was created face by face - half the head, which was then mirrored and welded. I also wanted to get the materials to a decent point before turning this in. I used procedural textures.

Here is the original render:

http://webusers.warwick.net/~u1019306/myblenderimages/dinosaurhead-byrjt2004.jpg

Here is a post-processed version:

http://webusers.warwick.net/~u1019306/myblenderimages/dinosaurhead-postprocessed-byrjt2004.jpg

Here is a wireframe:

http://webusers.warwick.net/~u1019306/myblenderimages/dinosaurhead-wireframe-byrjt2004.jpg

Almost forgot to mention, this was done in Blender using a simple three point light setup (one ray tracing lamp). Post processing was done in Photoshop. Render time took about 2 minutes.

Don't ask me what kind of dinosaur this is - I made it up ;)

The other entries look great! I hope you like mine. Take care.

This is the head of the almost-complete Pteranodon I posted earlier (post #58). I lobbed off the body so I could work the head into something more souther--- er, i mean, something more complete & polished... Basically I collapsed my smoothed mesh and spent about 2 hours (in addition to the 1/2 hour I had already put into it) pushing existing vertices around to make it more organic & less linear. Seemed pretty easy, actually. I was aiming for something that looked like it could have been done in zbrush. Not sure if I succeeded or not. Then I spent 3 hours or so texturing (not my strong point). And voila.

Heres' a dinosaur skull more I did this morning. This took about an hour and 45 minutes:

http://webusers.warwick.net/~u1019306/myblenderimages/dinosaurskull-byrjt2004.jpg

http://webusers.warwick.net/~u1019306/myblenderimages/dinosaurskull-wireframe-byrjt2004.jpg

Made in Blender 2.31 with a three point light setup using ray tracing illumination. I spent about 15 minutes looking at t-rex skulls online before attempting this. While I liked the t-rex skull structure, I wanted some horns in there too, so I wound up creating another fictitious dinosaur ;) Render time was about one minute.

The other entries are very impressive. I admire all your work!

Roberto : Dig the expression. Although it could almost be mistaken for a horse -- I think largely because the angle of the jaw is so big. Plus I imagine the eye sockets ought to be closer to the middle of the skull. But still... Dude's got attitude.

2 hours for the model. Max 5. Dunno how long for the bump map -- too long, probably.

hi,

I know that the session is endet, but have to build my idea now =)....I very like ilaīs Dino and so I start to build a comic-like T-REx,too...but while I model that beast I change my mind and now it becomes more a gozilla-baby style...no sure if toon-style or real...at the moment, will see... here is my mesh after 2:30 hour modeling...very raw at the moment, but coz I starting freestyle I change some parts often before I know what I wont....

oh...bsw. very cool dinoparts in this session! congratulation to everyone....
