View Full Version : Ati Radeon 9600 Pro, Win2k/xp, User Feedback Please
Undseth 01-26-2004, 07:14 AM Oooh, I want a new laptop. But, I would want to get some feedback from any users of the Ati radeon 9600 pro card before buying this laptop I've seen. (Its called Whitebox/Cl5)
Oh, and I'm not interested in comments/recommendations on any other card
Did a search, and did some reading, but nothing relevant info came up.
So, anyone used this card with Maya (any version)?
Have read that some cards may show some problems in the viewports in maya.
I have an older Ati card that works 100% (no hardware rendering), but want to buy a better machine for several reasons.
This may be an unanswered call out into the dark, but I want to aks anyway.
Any known issues with the use of this card in particular, with Maya?

I have a Radeon Mobility 9600 Pro Turbo in my laptop (Dell Inspiron 8600), and, so far, it's been working mostly fine with Maya 5.0.1. Everything runs really well, especially at 1920x1200.
One glitch I've experienced is getting a completely gray viewpanel when switching from 4 panels to a single panel. Hitting the space a couple more times (to toggle back and again) seems to clear it up.
I also occassionally get some refresh problems with shelf icons. Sometimes, when switching shelves, the buttons from the previous shelf are still visible. Moving my cursor over the buttons clears it up.
Other than those two things, things have been running smoothly.

I must admit have little knowledge in hardware stuff, and I really appreciate you reply. If those things you mentnioned were to appear on my laptop-to-be-purchased, i guess i could live with that.
Ehehe better to lower my expectations me thinks.
Looking forward for more replies from other users :)

I got one. No problems here. Maya has never run better. It's fast too, I am really satisfied with this card.
all the standard problems that you read everywhere have been fixed with the latest drivers so problem != problem.
[edit] hmm, I just thought of something. the description of the connections in the hypershader (click on the arrow), in the square balloons, are not visible for some reason. Didn't figure out what fixes that by the way.

Good to hear! :applause:
The whole thing looks promising to me now. Although I guess I will not know for sure, until I try this laptop with its specific hardware.
--- no need to comment on the following, unless you really want to ---
Now I wish I could figure out if the hardware works like the advertisement says it will.
Here's the data from the advertisement:
Intel© Pentium© 4 Processor 3.0 with 512KB on-die
Cache & Streaming SIMD Extensions 2 (SSE2)
Chipset: Intel R682845MP / Intel FW82801CAM
(Could not figure out specifically what Intel hardware these are)
Memory: Supports 400MHz Dual DDR RAM modules, 256,512 & 2 Memory Slots, max 2 GB memory
(two modules and two mem.slots??? is that four then? I guess not, so is it 1GB or 2GB?)
To anyone who has this card... does it work with Hardware Rendering?
Thanks!
