Hi Folks ,

Welcome to our unofficial Animation Challenge. Based on this ones success and popularity we plan to have one of these every two weeks.

This challenge is to animate one of the three scenarios listed:

Sneeze - As in someone thinks they're going to sneeze, then not sneeze and then finally sneezing.

Swat - Trying to swat a fly or catch a bug.

Sleep- Character trying to stay awake, finally falls alseep. Maybe something really loud wakes him up at the end its up to you.

Rules:

Animations will be between 5 - 10 seconds

Fixed Camera: No camera movement allowed , the focus here is animation not camera work.

No textures

--

Please post your WIP animations under this thread.

Those of you who dont have rigs can download one of the many free rigs around , if you need one post a message and we'll help you out.

This challenge starts January 26th and ends February 9th.

Good luck to everyone!

Glad to see this challenge.
But a question. Why don't U give one puppet with a setup and a rigg and everybody must use this one ? Like that we can judge the animation and not the rigg or setup, everybody have the same one. Everybody will be at the same level with the same puppet.
No ?

P.S: Excuse my english.

YEH!

Tonight I should be finished with my rig, so I think ill block out some animation, or at least know exactly what I want to do.

Anyone work out there story for it yet?

See you all in a while!

"IK Joe exists" for both XSI, Maya and 3Dsmax. I'm sure some other people are converting it to other apps.

For the XSI and Maya rig:

For the 3DSMAX version

Hi DArkVIDor, I dont think the rig issue is a very important one, focus is on animation, as Stefan says , you can use one of many ready available rigs, like IKJoe or Generi Rig, which also cames with a facial setup (http://andrewsilke.com/generi_rig/generi_rig.htm), this one is pretty good, am using it right now for this challenge.

Btw does anyone know how to switch the legs IK/FK on the Generi Rig?

Cheers

Forcing people to use the same rig will not slove anything. It will frustrate those who use amazing rigs on a daily basis (ahem....like...we...AHEM....do...here....thanks John.....yourock) if they have to use one that is substandard and it will give false to hope to others, who feel as if a stardardized rig will somehow even out the competition plane.

Let people use whatever rig they want. Heck, I might even use my dragon for this challenge!!

Cheers....and best of luck!!

Howdy all,

Just thought I'd 'check in'.
I think I'm going to do the 'fly swat'. I'm going to do a bit of filming myself tonight for reference.

BTW posetopose I loved that dragon animation. Very fluid stuff.

Look forward to seeing peoples stuff.

Cheers

my aim is to do the "sleep" one, and if I find time perhaps either one of the other two.

I'm definitely gonna go for this challange.
I was thinking why we dont have a challange like this, when there is a speed modeling challange.
So I hope this one will be a success.

And I hope people are not scared to join, even if they never animated before, this is for learning, nothing else!

I think I will go for the Swat a Fly. Got some ideas for it.

Good luck everyone!

Oh well I'll kick off.
started blocking my animation last nite, the storyline goes a bit like this: guy seating on a high chair, bug enters frame, guy gets scared and climbs on the chair, as the bug prepares to climb the chair as well, the guy produces a huge bat from behind his back and prepares to hit the bug with it, with all his strenght swings the bat above his head and tries to hit bug as it clibs the chairs leg.... he misses it and by hiting the chair, it goes flying under his feet...he floats in the air before smashing is face on the ground...the end...

Sheep Factory, how many participants will it take for "success"? I'm going to try and participate in this one (my first), but I have a lot on my plate right now. I'll see how much I get done this weekend. These are great scenarios btw!

Click on the hand controller, and in the channel box is "Ik_fk" with a value of 10. Zero switches it to fk. Andrew Silke explains this in the instructions that came with the rig. :)

Sorted, it was a Mozilla problem, works fine in Explorer...

As for the characters i prefer #2, it feels more expressive and perhaps looks a bit dumber and silly, than the other 2.

Lookin good Stefan!
Couple of points: 1st when he's head is droping down slowly and just b4 he reacts ,i think he's head shouh drop very fast further down, just like he actually felt asleep.
other thing, it feels kinda strange why he sudenly turns his head and body very quickly to his left b4 the fall.. in my view, its just such a fast move that doesnt work with the action straight after when his head and body start falling slowly.
____________________________

I've done a bit more work on my animation, pretty much blocked everything apart from the fall at the end, the hands and the left arm.
Would apreciate some comments on the action and timing.

Cheers Andy, finished the blocking so now will start playing with the curves and then into the facial animation, will post sumthing soon.

Gosh...it is quiet around here, can hear a pin dropping, hope this is the calm b4 the storm..
I was hoping people would start posting they WIPs (if anyone actully got around doing any animation yet), so we could all comment and help each other, otherwise theres no point for this challenge thread.

well done Andy, I love it, the mood the sound fx, the animation, the 2 little front teeth...everything.
looked at it some 10 min. trying to come up with anything that could improve it, but damn it, it's good. pehaps one little thing i would try... offset the eyes blink at the beguining by 1 frame or so, so they dont open and close at the same time...thats the only thing i managed to came up with.

cheers

Howdy All,

Firstly apologies for not posting something yet. Have had a couple of mad evenings..the animation is taking shape though and I will post tonight.

Secondly, andy_maxman.
Nice anim, I love the end section when the clock goes off and he reacts to it. I don't think the starting 'nodding off' reads to clearly when you view it for the first time. If I were doing it I'd have the kid more relaxed in the chair, leaning back, less upright and generally looking tired.
His nodding off I'd then do more with the head and neck and less body movement. I've got the image of watching someone fall asleep on the train in my mind, where the body stays in place and the head kind of droops.. Sorry I can't show you what I mean.

These are just my opinions/ideas, not saying anythings wrong.

Good work!

Cheers

hi gru,

well thanks a lot for those comments. felt really good about it. and about offsetting the blink ...i'm not too sure if i get where in the beginning you wanted it to be done. 'coz his eyes just keep opening and closing mildly.

hi blowtorch..
i thought about it too...but then i wanted to go for a feel where in the character is been sleeping for quite a while and is sub-consciuosly swaying...if you see any baby sleep on a swing...the tend to go all over the swing more.......moreover if you were to be in position where your back is not rested...then u'll be bound to have your spine sway to......thats the reason for his body moving.....

i'll wait for a few more critics and then i'll reconsider changing that......

thanks a lot again.....
waiting to see what others are upto.....

Acorn, cud u up ur file in a diff format pls. hi blowtorch.. hi gru, Acorn thanks a lot for those comments

would 've been fair to go ahead with just 10secs. ...but neverthless your animation looks good at first go......more comments on it a little later....perhaps you cud've gone a bit extra ahead with adding a fly or bug in there......
till the end you had me guessing whether he's gonna be swalloing it :)

hi gru,
smooth animation.....my peers found it very funny...it looked cool to me......i was just thinking if you wanted to add more of flutter when he's in the air and about to fall......just a thought.......

i also like the catch anim which went on for 25secs...good stuff..

and to all the other guys who came saw and left........my wife is furiuos that she let me work on the animation on the weekend for very few of 'em posting their works....
cmon guys we had just 10 secs to get done....and generi is an awesome rig to do some thing wuickly...
looking fwd for reviews......

so long!!!!

grury

Cheers Andy, yep i agree, gotta get back to it when i have some free time, actually cutted a bit of the hold in the air to make the 10 sec limit..
btw, what settings are you using for smootheness? yours apears to be slightly smoother than my one (or maybe is just your soft lite look), although am using the max value (2) on the generi_cog_ctrl...is there any other setting to make it smoother.

Love your facial animation, thats something i also have to work out on mine, looks too basic.
