Hello. I have a city im making
http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11678

And I use GI which takes like an hour to render at film resolution with dual athlon 2000+. Im looking into the baking of GI.

But I haven't really done this before though I've read couple tutorials. The are thing that are not clear. If I have multiple object with the same material, basically I duplicate objects should I now assign differnet materials to each object by duplicating the object? What should I do with reflections? what would be the procces I should go through for each building that has the same material assigned to different parts?

Hi dennis,

I'm not sure, but I think if you are dealing with multiple objects with the same texture, i'll get a real mess... have you tried to contact Meni Tsirbas? I think he's the god of baking things! hehehe :airguitar :airguitar :airguitar

We'll that's it.... see ya

Just clone the surfaces and copy from original all parametars on surface editor.
For reflection use RefGen (search on Flay).
Good luck.

here's the link for RefGen:

While at it, you might wanna have a go with Overcaster for the lighting (should be much faster) and even SkyGen for the BG sky...

;-)

To be honest though, in your scene, you may be best off with baked GI and reytraced reflections - reflection maps, even good ones, tend to work rather poorly with flat surfaces like windows.

Anyway, if you go with RefGen, SkyGen or Overcaster, i'd be happy to help you if needed - great scene you have there.

Best thing to do is is copy your scene and blow away all of the duplicated objects then baked the texture maps. Apply baked maps to your object. Load older scene (if all of the duplicated objects are cloned in layout then they update instantly ..if duplicated in Modeler ..then apply surface from original to duplicated objects.
