Title: Ordinary Heroes, Lunatique (2D)
Name:
Country:
Software: Painter, Photoshop

Special thanks to Steven Stahlberg for a great crit in the form of a paintover. I gotta say, it's super cool to be sitting next to each other everyday at work, where we could just turn to the other person and go, "Hey, should I make this blue or yellow?" We've been painting over each other's stuff and giving each other crits ever since we met online, and it's wonderful to carry that tradition over to real life. (We've got a collaboration piece going on, and it should be finished soon. Keep an eye out for it.)
This is also the piece I'm concentrating on for the D'Artiste book. I'll be detailing every step of the creation process in the book. You can find out more about it here: http://www.ballisticpublishing.com/call_for_entries/dartiste/

you went a little bit over-board with the close-ups. It would have been easier to post a link to the full version.

I love the feel and character poses. Reminds me of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time only in the amazon not the Sahara Desert.

Beautiful work man....
I too was inspired by early D&D and dragonlance covers, pretty sure I wouldnt have gotten into illustration at all if not for that influence.

I like the shadow work....use of color and mood...
If I absolutely had to crit something, and this is just being picky, personally I like paintings with deeper backgrounds, large vistas, that draw you in...but I'm not realy qualified to judge I only wish i could do as well.

great work all around

Sorry about that. I can't post a full-res version because this piece will be printed in an upcoming book. I never post a full-res anyway, only desktop res.

Titan- Thanks. I had mountains in an earlier version, but it looked out of place. . ..

Nice work again Lunatique, not much to comment on, aside from the hue of the image, a bit to greenish/yellow for me, but aside from that pretty nice.

Realy nice detailwork!
The forehead on the second guy from the right buggs me a bit, but I guess one wouldnt see that when it comes in print.

the shadows are a bit confusing (like the guy in the middle whos sitting down and has shadows in both directions from his arms)
And the horns on the woman looks a bit like its poking her in the eye at a quick glance at it.

The guy whos sitting down in the middle is my favourite, plz, plz plz add some highlights to his eyes!

how about making those full size images just links instaed.
Links we can click and open the images.
The first large image was enough for me, and the loading times on all of those was a bit excessive.

I'm not dialup, but think about those who are :)

Very nice work Lunatique, congrats!

My only comment is regarding the girl on the right (the one with the spear).

Her legs are lacking modelling or a "solid" feel to them pretty much all around.

Keep up the great work!

I so want to like your work. You get so many individual elements right in your paintings, but I think you tend to miss it as a whole when things get complex.

For instance the guy with the bow. His face and hair are nicely detailed but then most of the rest of his body is so flat. It's almost like you labour on some elements but run quickly through others. The demon head above the bowmen as another example. Also a lot of the poses are uninteresting (both females).

Sorry to sound so negative on this one. I absolutely love your mood1.jpg and portrait_tina.jpg on your site. Beautiful!!! If I didn't know it, I would think those two were done by a completely different artist then stuff like this and scythe_wolf. They are so different in quality to me.

missed seeing your stuffs. hey if i'd known that there was the siggraph thing that time i'd have gone down to KL, anyway will be dropping by in early feb :P

so, about the pic. what had been said had all been said, my only crit would be the whole coloring and feel of the pic has a lack of depth that should have set in, into the mood and into the colors.

anyway that's just my personal point views. still it's

seems to me like a conspiracy  stahlberg and you conquering the front page. I have to say it's worth it. Awesome piece of work, I love the details. I don't really like the style of the faces, I would've preferred some more normal skin colors. that's about it, I can see you have a very creative mind

good stuff, lunatique. but i do find the grass that's scattered between the cracks of the stone walls to be out of place. the colors are just fine, it's just that it looks like you used the 'paint effects' of maya for the foliage; it's too sharp, while the stones are too blurred. if you could soften the edges around the grass, it would help tremendously.

Apart from the previously mentioned crits, the girl with the red hair on the right, her foot looks really strange. Also, the style is very soft with some parts that are sharper which I don't know what to think about. Not sure if it's a good thing or not nor wether I like it or not... Still it's a nice piece.

Its a really nice painting! Lots of detailing and creative costumes

But there is something about the overall that bothers me. THe perspective is rather weird. The grass on the wall behind overlap the pillar to the left, which i get the idea is in front of the wall. Some of the shading makes it look like plastic dolls. I know its supposed to be cartoonish in style, but the level of detail varies alot and the shading seems to have different directions.
Did you paint the characters one by one and put them together?

Anyways, its just me being pointy.. it has been my desktop for a while. Good work

I like it a lot, the one tiiiiiiny issue i have is with the pale guy with the red tattoo and choker. the fact that the area under his eyes is dark kinda plays with the shadows a tiny bit. kinda does a number on my eyes. I dont know if this was intentional or not. its just an odd dark-light-dark thing going on.
overall, a masterful piece of work (i personally would like to see it in expose 2)
keep up the good work!

Nice work, a little bit flat in my opinion, wich makes it dificult to see the volumes, however only a small detail, making the shadows darker, may help.

wow,
i looked at this piece yesterday, but just had to think
[also, for some reason my contrast booted up on windows] which mad the piece look very flat and pale.
However? seeing it today with normal contrast, the piece looks so delicate with the characters under shadow

:) nice detail
good jobe

Amazing work. Even more amazing that some people can think so much in 3D when drawing 2D. But hell I gues you have many years of experience :-)

Love the characters, colors, lighting & and everything else of it too.. :-)

Now I never post for something like this, holy shit who am I, but one thing seemed to catch my eye, that wasn't mentioned. The man on the left, he sort of has a weird pectoral thing going there doesn't he, kind of a man breast thing. Please, anyone tell me if I'm wrong here.. oh btw Great work.. love the characters.

Thanks for all the comments!

I've already updated the images, and I worked a lot of your suggestions into the final finished version. Thanks for the helpful crits!

The painting took a looooong time. I really can't say how long, but it's the longest piece I've ever worked on.

There is a story for this. Basically, these characters start out knowing each other's reputations as villains. They begin on a journey together with a common goal, but for different reasons. Along the journey and throughout their adventure, they get to know one another, and slowly realize that none of them are really evil--they were only misunderstood, had to do the wrong things for the right reasons, or are victims of rumors and lies told by powerful but corrupt people. In the end, the true intentions of each for the journey was revealed, and all of them were noble.

So the point of the story is you thought you were watching a group of villains, but they turn out to be misunderstood heroes. This is why I cast them partially in shadow--to symbolize that there's something "shady" about them, but they are also partially bathed in sunlight--symbolizing their true nature.

Ah, quite inspiring work.

I love the mood and the typical group of adventurers - but not _that_ typical but having a unique edge. The group does look sort of shifty ... :D

I'm especially fond of the red haired girl and the guy sitting in the middle. He has such an intense and focused gaze that caught my attention right away. Mmmmm looking at the viewer.....

Sorry not much good for a real critic right now, it's late and I guess I sounded awefully like just another fangirl drooling. ^_^
