Hi everyone,

This is an animation I did in Maya 5.0. I am responsible for everything in this piece, but I am only looking for critiques on
my animation.

hey nice work, i really like the landing , it feels natural. My critique is with the double take. I think his head looks too stiff, maybe have him turning away a little more before he focuses on whatever he's looking at(mainly just rotating the head bone). I also think there should be a blink on the double take, not after.Keep in mind you animate a million times better than me so my ideas might be inexperience. Awesome work man, I really like the subtle movements of the wag.

very nice, I like it!

the only thing is after the lands... he becomes a dog..? or is he just a very cartoony funny dragon? hehe..

I really like the wings!

nice fluid animation - i agree with Pascaru though - when he lands it like hes a dog thats just caught site of a cat

i really like the fact that he is acting a bit like a dog or puppy, it adds a lot of character and a sense that the character is playful and inquisitive. hopefully that what he's going for.

Yeah,

the idea here was to create a non-human character that had recognizable weight and personality. If you think he is acting like a dog, then the personality is successful.

Thanks for the comments.

Very nice anim up until the landing , i think the wings need to move a little when he is landing.

The dog movement throws me off cause its not moving like a dragon anymore. I think you can still have that playful personality and make him move like a dragon would at the same time.

Very nice piece of animation!

Would have to second sheep factory though, he lands a little like a seagull or lighter bird with the hover/drop, but considering his weight when he's flying which works very well, I feel he should be beating his wings quickly as he comes into land to slow down his momentum. Just a suggestion. The wings and tail are very smoothly animated throughout, and I like the mischieveous character you've given him a lot, though the tail wiggle is a bit too cutesy for my liking.

Not to start a huge flame war.....but.....

"I think you can still have that playful personality and make him move like a dragon would at the same time"

How exactly does a dragon move?

Cheers,

Greg

BUT....

I totally agree with having the wings move when he's landed. I'm playing around with some of these ideas.

Thanks for taking a look everyone! Your comments are very much appreciated.

I really liked it! I think that the playfulness of the dragon works well (Admittedly you do think "that acts like a dog!") but then it seems to sit well and work with the character.

Well done (Ps had a look at your reel as well and that was pretty cool also!)

Ok,

Made some revisions to the landing. Alot of people commented on the "unnatural" hover, so i added an extra flap, and tweaked the landing. There are some problems with the leg action right before the landing, but I'm tweaking those.

Thanks for the great comments everyone! I'm planning on adding another few shots to this piece to make it a short.

Cheers!

Alright here are my two cents. I think the flying is awesome. The dog thing in the first one I thought was fine, but, I would have still added some fearce traits. I think the over all animation is good but in the end have him looking around either looking for someone (happily) or have him scan the area looking for someone that is in his territory.

I hope think helps

Hey, well, like the changes so far, but I think you could push it just that little bit further - wings could come further forward and down on that last flap to look like he's really struggling to slow himself down. Think big ol' eagles arriving at their nest.

Saying that though, it's better animation than I've ever done, so take this with a pinch of salt ;-)
