for a simple network all you need to get is a hub or a switch. a switch will be faster, but it costs a little more. you'll need Cat5E cable, which can be bought premade for a fairly low cost. both the computers must have network cards installed and then for both computers you just plug 1 end of the cat5 cable to the computer and the other to the hub/switch. if your running xp the network should auto-config itself on that machine. if your running win98/2000 then you will have to right click on Network Neighborhood and install File/Print Sharing and also set the Workgroup name. depending on what all you plan to do between the 2 computers you may have to also install the ipx/spx and netbeui protocols. there's lots of info. on how to install a home network on the web and also on microsoft's website.

you'll need to get a hub or a switch. the switch will be faster, but it will also cost a little more. you'll need Cat5E cable, which is relatively cheap and depending on the operating system each machine is using their might be some network configuring on the computer to be done. simple stuff like installing protocols, no big deal at all. if you choose to do it, there's plenty of information out there about setting up a home network on google.

Nah, spare yourself the cash and do a cross over connection. To do this, make sure both computers have an ethernet card and then go buy a "cross over ethernet cable." It has to say specifically, "cross over." You can connect the two computers DIRECTLY to each other this way. No haggle, no hassle. And it's way cheaper than buying a switch or hub. A single cable is like a couple bucks.

You could also go with a firewire card in each computer and a firewire cable. I have two computers and am using ethernet over firewire. Works well for me and it's quite a bit faster than my old 100Mb crossover ethernet connection. It would cost you about the same as doing an ethernet crossover.

I've always been a bit iffy about doing ethernet over anything other than ethernet. How do you setup a network and assign IP's and such? Extra software? Or can u do it through Windows?

two things I don't like about doing it over things like USB or FireWire-

a) no protocoll offloading (yea yeah I know usually the load is small enough that the CPU won't even notice it, but I'm super-picky about not making my CPU do things other hardware can)

b) non-Windows support

Windows will treat it exactly the same as an ethernet connection, its really great. I connected my desktop to my laptop (6pin to 4pin) and then copied over ~12gigs of music. It absolutely flew.

i guess whut im trying to do is

have say 3d app running on one and say paint program in another have then connect that if im doing a texture map in on i could have it show up on the other in say real time or even a second or two late crap like that

Im trying to set up one for 3d and the other for texturing and rendering

So if I am understanding this right, which I'm probably not, you want to see the render output in real time on the system you are connected to? I don't see how that would work unless you are using the two as a dual system to share the render work.

tools to work with :
two computers..one for 3d apps the other for editing and texturing

k scenarios
I have a model im working on
i want to sto start making uv's for this model
i want to
A) if its possible using the same key board and mouse open up a paint program on the other pc ..the display can be either on the same monitor as the 3d app pc or on the monior of that pc
B) if i have to use a different keybord and mouse work on my textures and have them sent over

this is different just a thought maybe im trying to see if i can if all of the above is impossible have them be accesable to the same memory banks like if i have a mainframe where all my work is stored and i can pull it up on the differnt pc

oh... go buy yourself a KVM switch. Those are relatively cheap and let you share the keyboard monitor and mouse between two systems.

yup, a KVM switch and just set up your network andd then use Windows File Sharing so that they can access the files on each other.

k so everything will be connected?

two monitors tow keyboards....1 or 2 mouses 1 or 2 keyboards (one preferably)?

with a KVM switch you can use one keyboard and one mouse (even one monitor if you wanted) and hook it up to multiple computers. You just flip the switch to the computer you want to be working with at that moment.

your mouse and keyboard- are they both PS/2 or do you need USB as well? also, are you planning on using two seperate monitors or just one?

only my key board is usb i plan to use two monitors

i haven't bought it yet waiting on ur input basically

i however set up a duals monitors on one system which i have a questipn about also

does that take up alot more memory becuase now that ive done it point selection and other things delay i mean it sez ive selected the points in one off my apps like lightwave but it does show them till late

okay, getting a USB KVM will be substatially mroe expensive. This looks like it will do: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=17-107-247&catalog=-1&depa=0

:D ouchh wut about the ones for 30?

3Dfx_Sage

the problem is that the cheaper ones don't have USB. Now, there was a cheaper USB/VGA switch but then you would have to also get a PS/2 switch as well and it would end up costing about the same...
