View Full Version : dual channel ram efficiency?
Rabid pitbull 01-24-2004, 03:51 PM I have just added anothe stick of ram and am now running in dual channel mode. Is it normal for the efficiency to drop considerably versus single channel mode? I am using two sticks of crucial pc 3200 with the timings set 3-2-2-5. The mobo is asus p4p800. I tested in sisoft sandra, and in single channel mode efficiency was around 96%. Now in dual mode it is at 76%.

I don't think it's supposed to do that. I read on certain boards that if u use dual channel mode, you're supposed to be using only a certain combination of slots for it to work. And another thing, sometimes mixing RAM manufacturer at different times might make a difference. Though a very stupid idea, sometimes you might just have an unlucky draw buying memory that had a very superior manufacturing process and then later on something that was kind of poor. So maybe one chip can't keep up w/ the other. It's sort of like the strength of a chain is defined only by its weakest link. But anyhow, I haven't used dual channel since my board doesn't even support it so I can't say w/ 100% certainty of what it should and should not do. Btw, what is your current bandwidth you are getting after the benchmarks?

I guess I have read somewhere that the efficency goes down, but that seemed like alot. I have been happy with the performance, and have gotten good benchmarks, It is definitly working! Sisoft sandra bandwidth is reading about 4850Mbs. I have seen big improvements in rendering test too, shaved from a few seconds to thirty in LW benchmarks. :bounce:

wh0a, PC3200 and ur getting 4850MB/s?? That's a drop for u? What were u getting when running only one RAM stick? Isn't the max for PC3200 3200MB/sec anyway? wow, can't wait till I get my new 400FSB CPU... I want my PC3200 running at full capacity!

Forget the meaningless 'efficiency' benchmark and try something usefull. Dual CPUs are only 70% effecient, but that doesn't mean they are slower than a single cpu.

I'm not even sure waht "efficiency" means in this context. The question is what kind of bandwidth do you see?

i would assume efficiency is measured by measured bandwidth / theoretical bandwidth. But yeah, what numbers are u getting and how are you reading them?
