View Full Version : Renderfarm
neovisionz 01-24-2004, 11:48 AM Hi All.... i got a problem... i have a 3d Animation project (architectural previsualitation, around 20 animations) that needs to be completed in a short period of time, 3/4 weeks.
That implicates to invest in a renderfarm as we are a small facility, my dude is if it's worth to buy a turnkey renderfarm totally ready to work with, or try to build my own.
I need something easy to setup....
If i build my own..what would be the best configuration..i was thinking in a 4/5 nodes renderfarm to start. Is it worth to invest in latest P4Dual Xeon 3.06?? 2 GB of Ram/node is enough?Gigabit or 100MB network?
We will use 3DMax 6.
Any help would be really appreciate as i don't have too much time...
Best

for a renderfarm I would suggest going with athlon MPs. the chipset is outdatet, but you don't need a good chipset for rendering - just cpu power.
the mp2800 are not much slower than the xeon, but much cheaper.

yeah, I like MPs. You can get more boxes if you go with MP's. Look at prices for pre-built ones and see if you can spend that much- the support will be worth it if something ever goes wrong. Of course, I personally am an Apple fan so I have to go "Xserv rules" but really if you want cheap, pwoerful, and simple then MP's wont do you harm.

hi thans for your replies...i heard that Athlon has problems with temperature..i mean...gets too hot...so the performance will be reduced at a moment....is that true??
Cheers

Hi,
i would use Barebone Mini PCs based on Mini ITX mainboards using P4s in the 2.x GHz range. They are fast enough, easy to setup, small, silent, cool running und last not least rather cheap.
Maybe have a look at the Shuttle XPC boxes
Shuttle (http://www.shuttle.com/index7.html)
MPs systems are surely faster if you match them 1:1 but you can get more Mini systems for the same mony and if one system fails it does not have such a hugh impact on the over all renderpower of your farm.
Hope this helps

no, thats not true.
if you do the things right (you are using the right coolor) you won't have any problems.
if you are using a wrong cooler for an intel system you would also have problems....

yep, modern Intel CPU's get hotter than Athlons.
