View Full Version : Direct3D problems
CG-Gordon 01-23-2004, 09:01 PM Some DirectX games work on my machine (the sims and sim city) and others don't, furthermore 3DSMax 6 won't run in direct3D. I have downloaded the latest drivers for the graphics card from Nvidia and the latest DirectX 9 drivers which doesnt seem to make a difference.
I get this Error message:
Direct3D failed to initialize.
Please make sure you have the
latest version of DirectX installed.
System:
Windows XP
AMD Athlon XP 2100
1.73GHz
512MB RAM
nvidia GeForce4 MX 440
Im not really sure what else I can do can anyone help?

I do believe 3dsmax R6 requires a 3D accelerator with at least Directx 8 compliance.
The geforce4 mx is not a Directx 8 video card, and does not fully support all of the features available in direct x8.
You can try opengl in 3dsmax by running with a -h after the command line.
3dsmax.exe -h.
If certain games require Directx 8 to run...then that would also be your problem.
Though the geforce4mx might appear to be a dx8 video card...its actually not, its more of a geforce 3.5 without fully dx8 compliance.

Before you completely give up though...I'd try a REALLY old set of drivers...like 21.83 WHQL.
You can find older driver sets at www.guru3d.com, or www.reactorcritical.com.
If this doesn't work, it could just be the video card lacks support, to which the only solution is replacing it.

Thankyou for such an informative reply, this has helped a lot. I had feared my graphics card was needing replaced anyway guess i'll just have to part with some cash and get a decent card.
Thanks again. :)
