bifftannen 06-25-2002, 10:07 PM i'm 16 i just started trying to learn how to 3d model about a week ago. i'm working on the messing head tut at maxon. but i cant figure out how to rotate the grid and everything. instead of just rotating the object. also. if you guys have some other tutorials that you know of that will help get me started i would greatly appreciate it. cause i'm haveing a hard time grasping the program and knowing what the heck you guys are talking about. thanks

at the top right of each window, there are four icons
Arrows for moving
Triangle for scaling
circle for rotating
windows for maximize/minimize
These control the windows camera.

nah...sorry i don't want to piss you off....but read the manual (which is a good one) first.....as said F1 is your best friend

i would but i don't have the manual
hmmm...
so where did you download the program?
The reference manual in .pdf format can be found at maxon.net. To model a meissie as a first project is a bit too demanding imo. Try some easier tasks first.
well tkay, do you think it is a good idea to tell w.arez-users where to get a manual? i think if someone uses illegal copies, he also should know where to get a manual!
:shame:
sorry, but i hate this. i would say this channel is no 'how to build a cube'-forum.
answer: take a ball and use the explosion-deformers to create a cube. :wavey:

Well the best way to rotate the grid is to make a grid object from the window under the light object, then a targeted camera, switch the lower right window to the camera name, place the traget where you want to move it, then manually move the camera around using the x y and z handles. Also make sure to make the new grid a child of the null object target to make things easier.

Jeez guys, lay off!! He's only 16, where is he going to get the money to buy a copy of Cinema 4D? If, like me, he doesn't have access to 3D classes in school, then using copied software is the only way to get a start. Realistically, it would be a little stupid to spend the money on a programme without having even tried it yet.
I think that once people can afford it, they should invest in legal software, but I don't think it's any harm to use a cracked copy to try it out until you can afford it. That's what I did (I have a legal copy now!). If Maxon don't have the cop on to release a demo CD (and not one that dies after 30 days), then what do they expect?
Cinema4DXL7.3 can be had by Studends for $300.
There's no excuse for theft, ever.
If he wants the software, he can get a job at a grocery store and save for it.
It's disgusting that anyone would do it, and more disgusting that anyone would defend it.

Huh? We do have a demo cd - and a demo version that can be downloaded from the website - and it doesn't expire. It's save-disabled, but I think that's a pretty reasonable limitation for a demo version.
And - let's not turn this forum into an argument about warez. I obvously have a vested interest in people buying the software (my paycheck), but I don't think anybody's mind is going to be changed because of a forum thread.

I have a vested interest in people NOT stealing the software, Rick... as a customer of Maxon :D
Rampant software theft leads to one of two places for a program:
1. Upping the prices
2. Software company loses so much money they go out of business.
Either way, my investment is affected and I lose.
Sad: How can you be sure this fellow is using an illegal copy? How can we be sure you´re not? It´s not in my interest to guess who´s using w´z and who´s not. Let BSA and Maxon themselves do that. Besides, why would Maxon put the manual out in the open if it was not meant to be public?
What comes to the build-a-cube part, when registering i never saw any restrictions or rules on allowing beginners to register or post. Remember, you were a beginner once...
I think we should concentrate on how to use the prog, not on who uses what kind of copy of a prog...
if you think he should have it, then why don't you offer to purchase him a legal copy instead of making everyhone else suffer for it?
TKay, you said I was new once too...
Well, I'm very sorry, but when I bought Rhino, I kid you not, I saved pennies to get it. I was working for UPS as a package loader at the time, and it was all I could do to scrap up the cash after paying rent and feeding myself.
After I got married my wife got Cinema4D for me, everything was earned. It makes me flaming angry when I see anyone ripping off software.
I don't know about anyone else around here, but my parents taught me that it was wrong to steal.
It seems like I'm behind the times...
That message was my reply to Sad. And of course stealing is a crime. I just don´t want to judge someone as a criminal on the basis of his/her questions and lack of manual...
"Let the one who is without sin throw the first stone."
It took me 8-9 months to save for Cinema art and BP3d,and another 12 to save for XL7 on a disability benefit, but Grey good buddy the reality is people are gonna come in here all the time with pirated soft, and nothing we do or say is going to alter their perspective on the situation, but we can make it easier on ourselves by just trying to ignore it,or we can turn the joint into flame central,I know which I prefer
Stu.
tkay: of course anybody should be allowed to ask if he's trouble using the tool of his choice!
you are right, judging whithout proof is a bad idea, i'm sorry for that. on the other side i'd say, maxon customers should know the website and its possibillities. reading that someone does not have a printed manual makes me suspicious because c4d is delivered with two printed manuals.
ok he's just 16. that is a point.
everybody was a beginner so was me. forums are meant for getting help and pleeeeez ask! sometimes one is like a dying duck in a thunderstorm, the answer infront of his nose. those moments make me happy, knowing a good forum.
i just don't like 'how do i open a tin'-questions.
my 'how to build a cube' joke should not exacerbate somebody, it was meant as a friendly joke.

hey, woah,
i AM using a Demo. if you don't believe me go to www.zdnet.com and go to the download section. then type Cinema 4d. so you can all calm down about that. jeeze. i'm not going to go spend 300 dollars on a program that i don't even know how to use. so just give me a break
thanks
In that case I appologize.
The Demo of Cinema4D comes with the PDF manual off the Maxon site. http://www.maxon.net
Ooops sorry dude :hmm:
Stu.
i never thougt in that way. demo downloaders must also download the manual. who didn't do that, doesn't have it.
sorry for shooting before asking.
Lets just assume everyone who is without a manual is using a demo, and does not know about the pdf eh? :)

Here is a hint that most PF users use (most not all) if you for whatever reason think someone is using warez, simply tell them to RTM (read the manual) anjd say no more, avoid accusations.
Thanks to Rick for his mature and very well thought out response.
and on ehte issues of Using illegal software, here is my opinion, if your going to do it, learn it yourself : ) Don't expect to ask those who bought the program and learned it themselves are always going to be happy to share. If you plan on using it for Hobby Self promotion, or money Buy it, if it is simply for learning purposes get a Demo version. I loved XL's demo, my only issue was the darn watermark being a little too distracting, (couldn't it be somewhat transparent?) of course I will bring this up when I am in a postition too.

mmm... gues I'm going straight to hell so.
Nuts to you!!

Actually, I think the watermark was removed from demo version in 7.1 - everyone was finding one way or other to work around it, and it was getting kind-of silly, so I'm pretty sure we just took it out. No guarantees it'll stay out.
Currently I think the only limitations are save-disabled and will only render one frame at a time (which can't be saved because it's save disabled).
And bifftannen, sorry this had to be your introduction to the CINEMA 4D community. Normally these guys are well-behaved
:) The best way to get up and running with the software quickly is the tutorial manual pdf - it's a little tough with the demo because you can't save, but really covers the interface and features well. There's also lots of tutorials on MAXON's website. Good luck.
