View Full Version : Ah, taking a risk w/ a refurb, ur thoughts?
singularity2006 01-23-2004, 07:08 PM Ah, being so short of cash @ the moment (yes, even after New Year's and them lucky money in them red pockets), I saw a deal that I couldn't resist. Barton 3000+ w/ a 400MHz FSB for 150. Only problem is that the thing is refurb from newegg.com. I needed the 400FSB mainly because my RAM is currently underclocked because it will not run @ DDR400 unless the CPU is also a 400 FSB (limitation of the KT400 chipset).
So my question is, what kind of damage will a manufacturer take on a CPU that can be refurbed? Anyhow, I ordered it as soon as I saw it because I know that the refurb bartons that go on newegg disappear within hours (and it did) and don't come back for a really really long time. Within 4 hours after I ordered the item, it was out of stock. So now I await to see if I need to have it sent back DOA or not. Won't receive the CPU until next week sometime though. Anyhow, what are your thoughts?

I've received hard drives from newegg that arrived DOA and didn't have any issues sending them back -- except they don't refund shipping + they don't pay for shipping it back :hmm: I think that's lame, but it's their policy.
Basically, you'll just be screwed over for the amount of the shipping charges if it doesn't work -- but usually refurb items are okay.

usually restocking fees are only applied to products that have to actually be restocked... if something is sent back defective, i couldn't imagine they would treat it like a standard return.
And to be honest, i have actually had better luck with refurbished products, many of the products i bought that were refurbished were in great condition
and to be honest, much like buying a new tv versus replacing a tv, to latter is cheaper, and refurbishing is similar, its cheaper to replace the innards than to get a tecnician to repair it piece by piece...
so i wouldn't be worried one bit, especially from newegg, i have yet to hear a bad review of them :)

excellent, thanks for the info. Yeah, @ 150 bucks, I couldn't resist the deal! But yeah, within a day, both refurb deals were out of stock. The 333FSB was out last night and the 400FSB, which I ordered, went out 4 hours after I ordered.
