View Full Version : IK Problem
I think this is something simple that I'm just not getting. I have a character all rigged. All the IK works great. Everything fine. Then, because this character needs to appear MUCH smaller, I parent everything to a master null and shrink it. The null is only moved and resized, no rotation. However, after shrinking, the IK does not work properly. For example if I grap the leg null (single null, thigh to toe chain) and try to move it up on the Y axis the null moves but the chain barely does anything, as if it had constraints that prevented Y-axis movement. Does this have something to do with how LW interprets IK relative to gridsize? Any ideas?

Just tryed this with my character- work well ... (LW 7.5)
Parent the mesh object and the nulls to the master one (befor u move it) with parent in place ON. Should be working.
The only one think i found during my work : the LW IK dont working if your character is wery far frome 0 0 0 - 2-3 Km and bones start jittering, or even not working (the IK) !
Good luck, hope this can halp u.
Thanks for the suggestion and help, but it's still not working. It's really strange. Here is a zip file that shows the problem reduced to the essentials. It's just the bones. The masternull is now set at a size of 1.0 . If you move the leg null, it works fine. However, change the size of the master null to 0.13, and then move the leg null. It seems to not want to move upwards, and is strange in general.

Can u replace the mesh object to null and poste this againe?

I dont know - its work
I tried this on 7.5, even with rotation, and even with some animation. U have gimbal locks - but i dont think that is your problem - its onley one toe null.
Here try this ones againe.
For some reason that scene file is crashing my lightwave. I'm running 7.0 . Did you save in 7.5? That might be it. This is weird. I doubt lightwave has a bug where IK doesn't work at a certain size....:hmm: I'm also a little confused about your response. Did it work for you at both sizes.

Yes its work to me
Here saved (and tested) on 7.0b
Well, the scene is still crashing. It could be because I'm on a macintosh, but they are usually compatible. Was there anything that you changed in the scene that I could just do myself? Did you experience that at the smaller masternull size(.13,.13,.13), the IK handle wanted to move more across the X axis and not move upwards? Thanks for all your help.

Ok - i just turn OFF the match goal orientation - newer use this junk!
And i add some keys for master null - just move, skale down and rotate.
During this i move the goal up and down, work like sharm.
Tell me haw u feel on Mac - i sold my G4 and now waiting for Macworld Expo.
That's interesting. Where was match goal rotation turned on? It's OFF everywhere that I can see. It's still not working. I've attached the scene with a 20 frame animation to illustrate. All that is animated is the size of the masternull. Let me know if you can see the leg straightening out as it gets smaller.
Mac OSX is pretty stable. I'm running it on a TERRIBLE machine though, so I'm not sure (266 mgz G3).

I wrote Match Goal Orientation - damn i wonted to write "Keep Goal Within Reach".
Just turn Off this and all will work. Bdw. your Goal null have skale 2 - keep an eye on this.

266 mgz G3 - its seems to be bege old G3 - wow man u need some upgrate!

Oh and free the banking rotation (IK) for Bone02.
Alright, it's working a LOT better now. It's still not acting as nicely as when masternull is at size 1.0 though. It still straightens out in the animation, but now I can manually change legnull in frame 20 to match the look of frame 1. Thanks for the help again!

No problem
In case this is useful to anyone in the future, I fixed this problem so that the IK acts exactly the same at the smaller size. I made the IK goal strength of the LegNull 2500. That fixed everything. :buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock:
