It can be done, it all depends on a few things. If the model is from your own mind, then maybe just a few quick sketches, so you can get a feel for how the mesh should flow and such. If its a real person, tons of reference images.

To do it without reference, you really do need a good understanding of anatomy and form.

the reason I mentioned sketching it is so that you have a better idea of where to place your geometry at, as well as how the polies should flow.

for a cartoon human you sure dont need references allthough references would be better, for realistic modeling, get as many photos you can.

this was only possible with reference (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11581&perpage=20&pagenumber=1)

HMM OK NOW IS A REAL CHALLENGE FOR ME!
I'm an architect and i know just a little bit about anatomy

but i do't want to use photo as reference of my work
so go on...my first attempt

Eugeny- Is my first head but i want to make this tutorial alos to learn some anatomy

Twidup- I'm improving mesh position every day....i'm just using the tutorial very few information on subpatch position

MrWyatt- your head rocks!!! expecially texture. One day maybe all cg talk0people who has done a realistic man has to put them togheter and make an animation...What a good challenge!!!
At that time i hope to do my part.
Anyway is not a cartoon render. It ought to be a human model for me to learn anatomy and to have a good human body for reference for every occasion
