View Full Version : Using new nVidia drivers on M60
Neison 01-23-2004, 03:18 PM I loaded up Maya 5 PLE for the first time in a couple months last night and it ran too slow for comfort on my Dell M60 laptop -- even spinning a simple sphere was laggy.
Wondering what the heck was going on, I also remembered that nVidia has posted their new driver update, so I figured I'd try and kill 2 birds with one stone.
Of course, after downloading the thing I found out that it doesn't directly support QuadroFX Go cards, only the desktop versions, but I tried using the QuadroFX 1000 drivers and everything runs like a dream again.
My questions are:
1) How harmful will these drivers be in the long run?
2) Any ideas why Maya would suddenly become laggy -- it worked fine last time I used it.
3) What utility is best for viewing the temp of the video card -- if something is going to go funky, I wouldn't mind keeping my eyes peeled.
Thanks :)

1) Not harmful at all. The beauty of NV's unified driver. However, you can work around this issue (see below).
2) No idea. Too specific to your system.
3) There is a tab for that in nvidia's newer drivers although it may be removed for you as I think it is removed for Quadro.
Keep in mind that laptops are a very different beast. Dell does not support using the generic nvidia driver and in fact, that is the reason you did not see QuadroFX Go700 listed. This is all controlled via nvidia's .inf file so you can either fake it or you can get the Dell version of the nvidia driver from Dell or nvidia. Dell will say you need to get it from them but we have gotten a newer version of nvidia with the understanding it is not supported by Dell (yet).
The other interesting thing is that Dell does not support dualview mode with the M60/D800. This was driving us nuts since the docking station sports a DVI port on it and we wanted to run an external DFP but 99.9% of those will be at different resolutions from the insane resolution of the M60/D800. We were able to resolve this but I can't understand why Dell would not provide direct support for this. It is in their driver, they just do something to disable it.

What do you mean by that? I am running dual view mode on my M60.
I have a 21" monitor hooked to my M60? The M60 is running@1920x1200 the 21"@ 1600x1200.
Although I have to say the image on the 21" monitor is not VERY sharp its bit fuzzy compared to the sharp CRISPNESS I get when the 21"is connected to the destop.
Please expand CgFX. Is there a solution for this?

Great, thanks for the quick reply.
I noticed that about the drivers from Dell -- they're still the same ones from last June/July. That's not much good if there's a whole new version number out that can help DX9 and all.
Do you have any direct links to the Go drivers on nVidia's site? I can't seem to find anything except the generic 5.3 download.
I've never had trouble with the dualview. They shipped me an 1800FP with my system and I've been using it for full screen updates when I edit in Premiere. Gotta love a "free" monitor. :)

 :scream:
I was not to provide said info. I apologize for any confusion.
Moving right along...
Ask him if Dell is going to support dualview in this relesae so you can drive two digital displays (internal panel + external DVI) at their native resoluitions when they are different (which is most of the time since the M60 is 1900x1080).

M60 is NOT 1900x1080 not mine anyway. Taken from the dell web site-
"Wide Aspect WUXGA-Display (1,920 x 1,200)"
I guess you have a different screen. I love the 1920x1200.

You are right, my bad. I had 1920x1080 HDTV on my brain.

Wow. Two fumbles in one day. I have it backwards. The M60 does not support nvidia's nview span mode if you have an external monitor that is also 1920x1200 or that you want to run at the same resultion as the internal panel in a lower resolution mode (e.g. 1600x1024) and use the faster span mode vs. dualview.

Are you using the dock or the onboard? I am assuming this is a CRT connected via VGA? The dock provides DVI if you can use it but I don't know about the quality difference between the onboard VGA output and the dock's VGA output. Don't have one myself to try easily either.
