I dont get it... 3 fail post and all my anticipations went skyhigh (great marketing btw. A failing link always triggers ones expectations.) It took only 4 minutes to DL your image(modem server?)
In my eyes, your model looked alittle chumpy/clumpy... the work is fine but work more with the anathomy and the slinky shapes of its muscular lines around the bones.

01-23-2004, 10:41 PM
guys, thanks for the compliments...

for the render i used the giJoe and two spot lights.

the toon render was the vector renderer.

took me about 30 mn to play with render settings. so that s really 1h30 modeling + 30mn of setting cameras and lights.

as for modeling quickly, byron polytools really helped :) I ain t much a modeler myself so i don t feel i deserve the attention.
most of the detail are just repeated extrudes + smooth. Then use soft modification tool in bpt to push and pull the surface like a big blob. It ain't clean, but damn it's fun and fast.
Wires and "junk" are nurbs or poly surfaces repeated with random translation/scale and rotations.
the hard part is just to get yourself in the mood and not look back when you think youmade a mistake. Great exercise.

anyway, great addition to cgtalk, this new section :wavey:

Unfortunately I SUCK at modeling mechanical stuff. This is my first time applying a bunch of stuff I learned in the theoretical-subD thread in the max forum. I worked awfully slow :( and I used up all my three hours without finishing the model. Oh well.. I kinda liked how the legs turned out but the head definitely needs to be re-done.. like much of the model.

I recorded a timelapse if anyone wants to see... I'll post it up.

http://ircshotgun.hypermart.net/SpeedModelling1.png

I did come across a few things when making it. For example, is it possible to restrict the movement of objects with relation to other objects? For example, on the above picture the legs are suppose to be able to slide up and down to help it move, can this movement be controlled?

At the moment it is impossible to pose :surprised

a few technical details for you
it flies with the aid of the two vents on the top, this stops it from going around and around and around and around and around

it has a special anti fall over stabilizer on the rear which u cant see cause its on the rear

all other issues would require upgrades that the 3 hrs wouldnt allow
so stay tuned when ever but not in this thread

Here's my antEbot, an alternate future bot created to address the problem of a world overrun with super evolved ants:

http://webusers.warwick.net/~u1019306/myblenderimages/antebot-byrjt2004.jpg

http://webusers.warwick.net/~u1019306/myblenderimages/antebot2-byrjt2004.jpg

http://webusers.warwick.net/~u1019306/myblenderimages/antebot3-byrjt2004.jpg

Some wires:

Wireframe View 1 (http://webusers.warwick.net/~u1019306/myblenderimages/antebot4-byrjt2004.jpg)

Wireframe View 2 (http://webusers.warwick.net/~u1019306/myblenderimages/antebot5-byrjt2004.jpg)

Wireframe View 3 (http://webusers.warwick.net/~u1019306/myblenderimages/antebot6-byrjt2004.jpg)

This was created in about 40 minutes in Blender (includes render time, which was very fast).

This is all one mesh which began as a simple cube that was extruded many times, during which subsurface division was applied. Much of this was made possible due to the loop cutting and selection tools now available in Blender.

All materials are standard procedural. Lighting and textures are not optimal, since the goal here was to do this and convey the robot concept as fast as possible.

Hope you like it :) The other entries look very nice.

Thanks!! :) I appreciate that. Yeah, the textures aren't great (you can see I didn't spend much time on them), and I'm not particularly happy with my lighting setup (way too much specularity). I had wanted to do some raytracing, but a quick early test didn't look well with the colors and light setup I quickly concocted (plus, there wasn't an environment, so raytracing wouldn't add much anyway).

I am pleased though with the way the model came out. I allowed myself this fun diversion for only a little time because I'm spending all my free time working furiously on an entry for Expose II. Modelling can be extremely fast in Blender once you get over the basics and mechanics of selecting, extruding, resizing vertices and faces. After that, it's just a matter of letting your imagination loose.

I'm pushing myself harder than ever to do more and (hopefully) better in less time across a number of different modelling styles. Thankfully the latest modelling tools in Blender have made that possible. The loop select feature is especially cool when you enter the material/texturing phase because you can quickly isolate regions of a mesh and assign different materials. The internal renderer is also a lot faster these days, even with the raytracer on, so all of this helped contribute to the completion speed of this project.

Was working on this bot, and ran out of time about half-way through... Here's as far as I got:

Hi!
Ive been wanting an adequate excuse to model this guy for ages - what better than my first try at a speed modeling session!

Incase you dont already know, he's the old gardening robot from the very excellent Laputa: castle in the sky. He lacks the arm fins that the soldiers have (incase anyone points this out) He's hundreds of years old and covered in moss and vegetation (well, not yet anyway!).

Ok, so its not the most detailed or complex model, but its pretty close to the original concept. I used up all 3 hours on it - Id love to spend more time on it, so i might make it into a full 3D WIP project soon. Made in Maya by the way.

FELLAH! You've got to contribute dude. I haven't posted to any of these speed modeling threads about anything yet but I've been keeping tabs on them religiously. I don't (til April) have time to do my own contributions but yours and m@'s are the two I look forward to the most! (lots of other folks, you guys all have great work too, but those two guys are just my "gotta see what they did" guys). So, Fellah, don't be shy man, if you've got the time, put something together, I'm sure it will be awesome, and don't be daunted by m@'s.

I sure hope these speed modeling sessions continue to be done and featured, these are awesome.

[edit] Btw, Kingmob, I really like yours. It's very "fallout" (the game obviously). If you did an HDRI render like m@ it'd get that cool highlight/reflection that you have in your illustration and be even more excellent.

Hey guys, I looked in the root forum but didn't see a rules thread. For these speed modeling sessions, does the 2.5 or 3 hour time limits include concept/texturing/rendering time, or only for modelling? Like, could you spend an hour doing a sketch and an hour setting up your shaders and render and not have those two hours contribute to your overall time or is it 3 hours from start to finish period? Thanks.

mv
01-24-2004, 11:26 PM
Whiterabbit : first thank you for your kind words, and I usually say in the first post of the sessions that the 3 hours are for pure modeling. Ref searching, concepting, shading, rendering not included.

The rest is just up to how far youw ant to go...

just show a wire of the model at the 3 hour step.

Here's my first sad attempt at one of these, though it was fun making this "alarm" bot, kinda looks disgruntled to me, eh? He just floats around, hoping he might see something to squeal at. Only took 45 minutes in Maya 5.

Hey Guys, those are some pretty great models!

Too true... this was a lot of fun! I had a couple of hours and here is my 2.5 hours worth, needs a bit more work... he's a 'Pillbot', he's supposed to be about the size of a quarter and be able to collapse down to a turtle like state. The way I figure it, this is the guy who's messin' with the spirit's (Mars land rover) flash memory.

Anyway, if you feel inclined, visit www.lostpencil.com for a download of the original sketch, Max 6 source file, and a step-by-step video of the modeling process of the first two hours (no audio, 800x600). If anyone has a mirror where they can host the video files, please let me know. Combined it's about 270mb - it's mpg1 so anyone should be able to view it on a Mac or PC. Hope it helps someone.

Just for fun I thought I'd share a look at a robotic rover I've started working on today for a different 3d challenge. This was created in Blender in about an hour and a half after several false starts:

http://webusers.warwick.net/~u1019306/myblenderimages/marsrover-wip1-byrjt2004.jpg

http://webusers.warwick.net/~u1019306/myblenderimages/marsrover-wip2-byrjt2004.jpg

http://webusers.warwick.net/~u1019306/myblenderimages/marsrover-wip3-byrjt2004.jpg

Three more images:

image 4 (http://webusers.warwick.net/~u1019306/myblenderimages/marsrover-wip6-byrjt2004.jpg) (front)

image 5 (http://webusers.warwick.net/~u1019306/myblenderimages/marsrover-wip4-byrjt2004.jpg)

image 6 (http://webusers.warwick.net/~u1019306/myblenderimages/marsrover-wip5-byrjt2004.jpg)

(relatively high jpeg compression used, so images aren't as clear)

Like my antEbot, the rover started out as a cube and was extruded many times in subsurfurce division mode. It is all one mesh (except for the multipart eyes). The landing pad is its own mesh and is also cubic in origin. More details will be added. No materials have been applied yet.

This will be part of a scene and will be based on a "real" hypothetical future Mars mission, part of a series of pre-terraforming rovers that can separate from their base and fly to take air samples and explore broader geographical regions.

It's excited to see all the excellent entries in this thread, and I'm honored to have an opportunity to post my images beside the works of such amazingly talented and creative modellers.

Thanks for checking out my work, and enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Here is that i came up this evening ... i do not got a real idea for a robot just a rought concept. :surprised

it's a quick and dirty 1:09 hours model ... a lot of parametric objects used. Done with Cinema4D.

Hello:

I have never posted anything here before, so let's see if I can figure this out.

http://www.dandelioninteractive.com/fun/robot.gif

http://www.dandelioninteractive.com/fun/robot_shaded.jpg

3 hours to model. Another hour to shade. My 9 year old son directed most of the modelling, and tried to build the foot. My younger daughter sat on my lap and helped me size the ribs. My 2 year old decided that it was no good and powered down the computer after I had the ribcage done and was working on the neck.

All in all, a fun exercise.

Anyways, this model is based mostly on 343 Guilty Spark, from Halo. I did'nt totally copy it. It's kinda simple cause im still learnin.

And NICE JOB! to all of you other guys.

greetins,

Decided to take part on this cause the "robot freestyle" sounded so cool. Used more time to think what to model than to modeling itself. I did a cleaner bot.. or maybe somekind of maintenance unit called Botmop. Built from bucket, some lenses and a mop...of course there are huge amount of hightech insinde ;) and the rest of the body is missing.. so this is just a head part.

This model is done in Rhino/rendered in 3Dmax, took me 1hour 15min to model. I know I should train lowpoly instead of nurbs but well .. next time :)

Well here is my final based on the time limit. I really liked this challenge! Lots of great modellers out there!

Modelled and rendered in 3hrs. with trueSpace6.6.

Right robot is my 2nd character ever modelled and was for the challenge. Left robot is my first which I did just last week and is based on a small army man sized plastic robot I found in my backyard while digging a garden. I think he is from the 50's. I still need to rig and pose both. Hope you like them!:)

well i guess this theme is finished and i missed it...
but last night i thought i'd have ago at knocking something out....wanted to finish...but last night at 3hrs in...didn't have any tweaks, materials, render! jeez...its so hard.
its the main head then in nurbs and then copied many times...and cut up at differing nurb levels...then used pieces to create...face mask, face guard, skull cap, wires(using ditools), eye socket i used from an earlier model...main eye tried to get fly eye style but hard to see...then used jenna to place eyes/scanner array...tweaked tonight...along with little detailing...pipes..etc.
the internals of the model are a pig ugly mess...but hey..you guys can't see that.

love the work you guys have posted...some stunning stuff...glad to see c4d represented by some v talented guys out there.

very good model, can u show more screens please ?

flingster
01-30-2004, 01:27 PM
well i never did any screen shots...but i have gone back and deconstructed the method for ya...hopefully it will give you some insight into the trickery of it all...re-using areas of the model...interation/arrays of detailing etc....as i said the inside is horrific...anyways hope you like.
things like jennas mesh array allows you to drop objects onto a polys surface speeding whole process, ditools trickery using displinegen with contourfinder helped me create spline wires v quickly...which makes it look more filled out. reselector plugin allowed me to select random areas of the skull cap then i extruded with variance a few times on a few different layers and combined them...again all speeding up process, but allowing model to have peachy detailing. Dunno if this would be considered cheating or not really i'll let you guys decide...i see it similar to some of you guys using zbrush to detail nodules or whatever bumps...well thats my take anyways.
