I got a mail today from Microsoft. It told me to install the latest patches for security etc. There was an attachment included
PACK653.exe

I installed it successfully.
Later I got a big error box all the time saying. " An internal error has occured in module mapi32.dll.
Default mail account has a damaged table of contents. It is reccomended to newly reconfigure your account records. MAP132 needs these informations in order to be able to send and recieve mail. Failure to do so may causethat some MAP132 dependant applications to become non functonal.
I the edit box enter your name etc..."

There is a big box underneath that wants me to fill in the blanks about my e mail account details, password etc.

What the hell is it all about.
When I do the google search for PAK653.exe I don't get much info apart from virus something...

I get the same error on my laptop.... as I installed the patch on it as well.

Everything seems to be working normal apart from this error message.
Did I install a virus? If it was a genuine MS mail why is it doing this?

I think I had installed a virus. I downloaded Panda antivirus software and McAfee antivirus software. They both showed that my PC + laptop were infected. I disinfected both and now no more silly messages :-)

So incase you get that attachment think twice :-)

For future reference...microsoft doesn't individually mail out updates :).

Yes, Microsoft will not likely attach patch updates or anything of the sort. Only download software that is linked to the microsoft website, and make sure of the URL because many spoof urls can look like the microsoft website.

Your best bet, scan it with a good virus scanner, adaware, and spybot. Hopefully it hasnt done any damage so far.

"Hopefully it hasnt done any damage so far."

I have just finished reinstalling XP on my laptop. Things were not perfect even after deleting with the help of antivirus software.

Luckily I leave my laptop always clean ie. only the project I am working on. When it gets finished I burn and save it.

SO it was not much hassle. Just have to reinstall all the bloody softwares.

On the W2000 desktop things look much better. I want to reinstall anyway to clean up things.
Although reinstalling there will be a major headache as too much data needs to be backedup.
I will buy a DVD burner this afternoon. Although most data is already backedup.
I hate this. I knew I should not have installed that crap. It's as if the devil made me do it.......grrrrr
