it's actually not a limit - the slots are just your material "palette".
just hit the x button in ME to clear a slot, the material in the scene is unchanged, and you can make a new one in its place.

as long as each texture has a different name you're okay

Basically, if the material is applied to an object in a scene (any scene), or stored in a Material Library, you can safely delete its Material Editor entry to begin a new one.
Just use the "Get Material" button to retrieve those that are stored.

well thanks all for the reply.
Fnkymnky : that reasoning and logic i have already applied
kandyman : same as above.
what i was aiming at was.. well my mind seems to be muddled but i do remember having read about a different work around other than the ones mentioned here.. hmmmmm.
so i guess its back 2 save the material slot 2 the library and use another
what i was looking 4 was . saving the whole 24 material slot at one go..
:hmm: :hmm: :hmm:

do what I do, use Multi-sub objects for every individual object or set of objects...

One other stupid way to do that would be to create a scene with you materials all in the editor the way you want, and then to merge your work into it.
I have a scene made with all the little presets the way I like, better lighting, and some better default materials. I use it when I start a new scene, or merge other scenes into it...
Just a thought.
