View Full Version : How do you make muscles bounce when you move like in real life?

In the movie, Jurassic Park, and dinosaur documentaries on NOVA, I saw dinosaurs that had muscles that bounce and shake when they walk. How did they create this effect?

A long time ago I saw a documentary on TV as to how they were created. They actually modeled the muscles and animated them. That's complicated.

that's truly a very hard task. you could try to cluster the muscles (each one with a few clusters) and the try ty animate them. or try the new jiggle deformer which gives you this secondary motion.
in LOTR actually they've programmed the muscle systems behavior. and this is really the "HIGH SCHOOL" and nothing for you if you just started with 3D or maya or animation.

i don't wanna unman you but this is really one of the hardest tasks in character setup.

hey dude,
there may be a plugin coming out by the name of absolute charachter tools for maya(currently it out for 3d max)...this plug is totally kick ass and will be a prayer answered if ported to maya...the developer mark snowsell is a really cool chap and is trying his best to give us a thumbs up at siggraph.

So the skin over the muscle is just cloth?

no you can't compare it to cloth. it's more difficult. it has to slide over muscles, has to fold in a thick way because of flesh and so. this is the real hard task and can't be accomplished just by default software (doesn't matter which one).

I was at a seminar where A|W and some of the creators of Hollow Man explained the process of creating realistic muscles. Absolutely mind boggling. Im sure theres more documentation on that somewhere.

or you can try to use wiredeformer where you want the muscle like and animate the wire or put some blendshape on your wire but in that way that could be very heavy.......good luck

Check out the bonus features on the Shrek DVD to see some cool muscular character setup.

You can also use influence objects and connect them to the rotation of joints to simulate muscle behavior.

There's a free plug called bodyShape where you can make blend shapes (morph targets) to simulate muscles. Get it at http://www.animagicnet.no/maya/. It sort of works this way; You just rotate the Joint, skinned, weighted and all, to the extreme pose, move some vertices and hit a button and a blend shape is created with an expression that morphs the surface accordingly. Only works on Poly's though. This can be used to get rid of weight problems too and could probably be useful in many other occations. This means you have to remodel things to look the way you want , but I feel you have more control this way. I haven't really tried it out yet though, but as soon as I get time off I will...

absolute character tools is a mind blowing piece of technology.

If it gets ported to maya i'll be the first in line to get it.

I saw a demonstration of it yesterday and the new skinning method DR. Snoswell showed was nothing short of revolutionary.

Its good enough to ditch maya and convert to max , and i hate max!
