View Full Version : Max 6 as buggy as ever?

I installed the demo version of Max 6 the other week. It came as part of Digit magazine. I don't know if it's just my system but hell, v.6 seems to be lacking in performance. I run 5.1 on the same system and it cruises compared to discreet's latest attempt. Admittedly my desktop isn't a speed machine but it handles 5.1 nicely: PIII w/ 512 MB RAM and Radeon 64MB vid card, XP Pro.

Examples (so far):

-Very slow load time in executing max at start-up.
-Glitchy OpenGL but could be a driver issue with the new version
-3dsmax.exe processes never quits in XP Pro Task Manager. If I open, close, and reopen max several times through the day, the process appears that many times in the system manager. I believe this was a known bug in earlier releases of max but were always fixed.

I also can't stand the Disney-esque new default interface. Yuck!

I'm not exactly sure I'll be ponying up chump change for this release unless I know it's time I need a new computer or these bugs are being fixed.

Anyone with a legitimate commercial release can comment on the above?

[EDIT] Oops! It wasn't Digit but 3D World that has the demo. I'm also going to load the demo on my P4 1.6 GHz laptop to see if there are any improvements. But overall I have a feeling version 6 isn't as release worthy it it was hyped up to be. Methinks I'll be sticking with 5.1 after all.:hmm:

hmm, i havent noticed a change in speed at all. loading is only a couple seconds different (slower) but viewport performance is identical.

weird. what speed of pIII? what display configuration with which card? (im also on a pIII)

No problems at here. I've noticed it to be faster than 5.x in many situations. But then again I'm running w2k :)

W2K rules

I found Max 6 much faster than version 5, only the starting screen takes a bit longer but overall is absolutely faster

Note I used both 5 and 6 on the same exact machine... W2K of course

Why do some of you think w2k is better than XP for max? i'd just like to know, some others have mentioned this to me,

Hi, are you saying that W2K is better than XP Pro? Should I consider moving to W2K? Thanks.

*Edit* Sorry, i didn't see your post G.Rodi. Guess I was posting at the same time :p

Win XP here. Load time is noticably longer, and overall max6 isn't as stable (crashes every day or two).

But there are enough sweeteners to make me stick with it :)

Here with windows xp pro service pack 2.
- First loading time: slower.
- General speed: faster.
- Stability: normal.

try to unable mentalray files, 3ds max will open faster.

On my W2K Max 6 *could* crash using Booleans ONLY, beside that it never crashes

G.Rodi I don't say W2K is better than WXP, it's just a fact

By the way let's go back to the point:

-Very slow load time in executing max at start-up.
Next to version 5 it slow down just a bit

-Glitchy OpenGL but could be a driver issue with the new version
I also use OpenGL and it works fine

-3dsmax.exe processes never quits in XP Pro Task Manager. If I open, close, and reopen max several times through the day, the process appears that many times in the system manager. I believe this was a known bug in earlier releases of max but were always fixed.
Never ever happened, never, i'm speechless about this bug

I also can't stand the Disney-esque new default interface. Yuck!
What do you mean exactly? Looks the same to me, didn't change much...

((3dsmax.exe processes never quits in XP Pro Task Manager))
you are right .
but to fix this :
i assume that you use the ((discreet-dark )) ui with opengl
so :
change the driver to direct 3d (( it will not quit immediately )) but it will quit
2- choose the default ui scheme
it should quit very fast then
......
overall , you nedd to upgrade your system ...
i hope this help ....

I have a Duron with XP sp1, 3dsmax 6 load a bit slower, the viewport perf. is the same, but i have the same problem with the 3dsmax.exe process that never quits in XP Pro Task Manager and about the interface is the same, maybe you version was customized by the magazine or something

-Glitchy OpenGL but could be a driver issue with the new version

i got this problem to under winXPpro, but then again i installed a new driver before i installed max6

doesn't XPpro support p4 hyper-threading better? thats the only reason i upgraded from win2k

Personally I hate Max6, discreet really tanked viewport performance into crapsville. Max 5 never crashed on me and I never had view port performance issues (althought Max in general has the crappiest vp perf. so its not really saying much)
The best performace I can get is in OpenGL but every once in a while there'll be artifacts in the viewports that can only be gotten rid of my moving the viewport partitions. And yes I did update the video drivers.
Max also crashes on me when ever I work too long in the wireparams.
What pisses me off is that I can't go back to Max5. I have too many projects invested in 6 features already (mental ray + particle flow)

I'm running WinXP pro SP 1 on a P4 3 ghz, 2 gigs of ram + a GeForce FX5600.

AFAIK winXP is slower then w2k.. mostly because of all the fancy graphic aditions in winXP. You can however turn off alot of the that fancy stuff and make winXP faster.... I just run win2k and properly will untill winXP 64bit is out.

Black Viper (http://www.blackviper.com) offers great info on how to pare down both XP & 2k to become lean mean rendering machines. Just be careful when disabling stuff having to do with network connections! It took me a day to get mine working again after mistakenly disabling the related services.

As for max 6- I'm sticking with 5.1. Personally I don't see where the need to upgrade is. Not as exciting as I was hoping it would be.:hmm:

im with you. our company upgraded, and im constantly making it crash!
and has anyone tryed the RPC plugin, if you use scenes from max 5 then use them in 6 with RPC, all hell breaks loose.
scroll the help at the same time as running the program it crashes, move materials around, it crashes, and load a scene and while your waiting get a cup of coffee or three.
cant say im that impressed.

just use reactor cloth or complex physique combinations with meshsmooth to see how many times per day it crashed:wise:
