Hi, I've recently updated my rig with two additional neck controls -and i'm considering updating it some more. Plus i fixed a wrong connection in the right arm:

this a shot from the scene file which I had been working on. The scene is completely keyed and I was fixing the in-betweens...but with the old rig as you can see here:

What's my best strategy for implementing the new rig into the already existing scene? for all the characters...

Hi Quiz,

create identical Character sets for the new and old rig, then
use TRAX to transfer all the channels except those that dont match. use constraints to transfer the motion of the neck and the arm. then you bake the animation out and delete the Point/orient/parent constraints...voila

What I would sugest is: First start animating with referenced rigs it will make your life a lot easier. For this perticular problem what I would try is reference the new rig into the animation file then transfer animations from the old rig to the new rig. You can try doing it throw the trax editor, but I never had much luck with that, I have always had luck with the dope sheet. Select each control individual and transfer one by one it takes a little bit of time but its much more stable then the trax editor. And once you are satisfied with that character then go to the next. You can just create reference in the animation file that you have. (DONT IMPORT RIG) cause then it wont be refernced.

Also what might help with the animation transfer is try to keep the same name in the controls. You might have to reanimate some things since your rig has changed a little.

Good luck :wavey:

thanks notto and ant,

while i'm onto updating rig maybe i'll just try to get it all the way there so this will hopefully be the last i have to re-update, so do you mind taking a look at this thread:

http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=117478

and see if any suggestions pop to mind for pointing my head with one locator node. if it's not too too difficult i'll try to implement it into the rig right away and make my life easier down the road.

still far to go with this anim and haven't even gotten around to texturing yet.

what you can do, is create a reference to the new rig in your scene. then download the zooXferAnim (http://www.macaronikazoo.com/mel/download/zooXferAnim.zip) script. type zooXferAnim to load it. now load all the controls of the character in the scene into the left pane, and all those of the referenced character into the right, and hit transfer.

this will copy all your animation onto the referenced rig. now when you change your rig, it will automatically update in the animated scene.

we use this technique all the time to update older animations with newer rigs. works a charm. :)
