What are your thoughts?

The biped is so easy- its done for you, all ik set etc

But does it limit you?

is it worth taking time to build a custom rig, even though it can be a pain to set limits and rotation directions, angles?

im just unsure which is the best road to go down (quite simplistic character based animation planned- but dont want to be restricted by a biped)

Biped is great if you need to re-use poses and tracks, and edit with NLA. I've used it before in production, and plan to use it again. It can be a real time saver, especially for games.

I wouldn't say it's limiting, but I would say it can be frustrating, cause it is quite different than just using a regular rig. If Max had it's own NLA system, I probably wouldn't use CS. Get the demo of CS4 and do a couple of animations, and see what you think...

I've found character studio tempramental at best, it's quick and easy, but doesn't work very well with some of max's functions. For quick setup rigs, I'm now using Character Animation Toolset which can build rigs for pretty much anything you can imagine.
