you can import anything that 3dsmax can render out Targa, Cine, bmp, jpg, mov, avi, etc.
3dsmax can render out *.rpf files which is a 2d render with Z depth information in the rendered file.
You can not open *.max files in Combustion

What format would you render out of MAX so that when you opened the file(s) in combustion, you could say, change the the texture of one side of a cube. Is there a tutorial or something somewhere I could refer to? Any help is appriciated!

You'll need to save out an RPF file. You also will need to save UV coordinates & some other channels as well. Have a look in the combustion manual about RPF files & what the individual layers are used for...
