:wavey: it's chinese new year today. happy chinese new year to one and all~~

this pic was finished in late dec last year. *lol* now's a good time to post it i guess.

the deeper meaning to this picture is actually to present how piracy has taken over the originals in the markets worldwide (yes the monkey below is the real one, on top is the fake one  )

on the lighter note, it's the monkey year!! hoho.

so yeah, have a good day people. hope you guys like the pic :p

Wow, great details. I really enjoy the flares on the edges of the softer materials.

My only crit would be that the head of the screamin' monkey seems a tad misplaced -- a little small too. If it were notched over to the right and enlarged to fit the proportions of the rest of the body he'd be perfect.

Again, great details, and excellent colors!

Piracy? Of what, Monkeys?

The monkey at the bottom was from the chinese folklore "Sai Yu Ki" (spelling?). The story I know what it's about but hard to explain it in english, cause I suck. But the monkey was the monkey king "Son Goku" (spelling?). The bottom is the genuine article, while the top is the imposter.

I probably made it even more confusing.
Excellent drawing.

Sun wu-kong (sp) ?
Excellent picture...just fabulous.
If forgot the story, but isn't it something like a monkey who's trapped under a mountain, then was freed by a monk, and they go to all the journey with the pig guy?

Julez4001
01-22-2004, 10:46 PM
monk: tripitaka
weaponsmith: Sandy
Piggy -

The gods imprisoned Monkey under a stone mountain because he was very naughty (but a good guy) and became too powerful to clean up after. Tripitaka freed him aslong he agreed to join him on his quest to retrieve the buddaist scrolls sp). Tripitaka places a golden tiara on monkey's head to keep under control.

The folklore in english is called "Journey to the West". Its a chinese myth......like the hercules in the greek mythology.
The monkey king, Son Goku, is came from a million years old rock who had absorbed the spirit of the sky and the earth. He is called monkey king cuz he ruled on his own mountain. One day he screwed up and challenge the the gods and said he is stronger then all of them. The gods got pissed and they had a war, it ended up that he got trap by the 5 finger mountain of Buddha. 500 years had passed, and a monk, who had a mission to bring a montra (kinda bible for buddhism, dunno if thats the right word) from india back in china, free him and accept him as follower, Well they met a lot of monsters in the way and one of them was the evil monkey king, who is born the same way as son goku. That evil monkey used to be good, but got jealous of son goku and want to beat him. Thats about the story. Sorry with my bad english.

Happy new year.

An ironic choice of subject matter and style...
Not meaning to diss but, isn't this image attempting to pirate theme, character and style from Katsuya Terada's monkey king comics.

you may be able to view some of terada's work here: http://www.catsuka.com/interf/insolite/terada/terada_divers.html

or at his site here:http://www.t3.rim.or.jp/~terra/

Beautiful, as is the work on your site. Can you tell me how you determine your color schemes? I love the light in your pictures...Do you start by coloring the whole thing in one color and work from dark to light? What's your method?

I can't help myself to be annoyed everytime when I see Chinese terms/names being widespread by the Japanese - using their pronunciation.

Even now, when it's about the original story, the name known from Dragon Ball is being used. Darn.

The Monkey King's name is actually "Sun Wu-Kong", pronounced "Soon Woo-Kong". It's Chinese.

Erm, I'm not intending to start flaming here...

Happy new year :hmm:

Great Work Noah!I'm a big fan!

With so much monkey talk goin on how could I stay away?

Even In our land and relegion : Hinduism... We have Monkey God Hanuman. He is one of the 8 Immortal gods in the Hindu pantheon.

Known to be a son of a consort and a court dancer he went on to become a celibate for life...and had extraordinary intellect and memory till he became too proud of it and was cursed to forget every important memory of his life... only to remember when someone reminds him that he knows it.

He had extraordinary strength and could fly crossing huge oceans....still revered and worshipped with great regard all over India mainly by the wrestlers and Body Builders.

An artwork based on Hanuman:: (http://www.gfxartist.com/community/member_gallery/24365)

Im working on a Monkey artwork....posting soon!

I like this piece. In fact, there is a renowned classical Chinese novels dated back some four hundred years ago called "The journey to the west" or "Monkey King", and there is one section telling about that the Monkey King fights againt a fake Monkey King who claims that he is the original one. to get more info about the novel, just go to http://www.china-on-site.com/literatu/classic/west/intro.htm:D

I would Love to make a monkey king movie! I've always loved this story. When I was a kid I saw an animated movie called "Ali Kazzam" Here in the US. Has Anyone ever seen this? There was also a great adaptation of it in Heavy Metal that was a lot more graphic and raw. That's the way I would want to make it rather then cute little monkey ridding on a cloud and turning into butterflies and bushes. :) I'd love to keep it authentic as possible and not give into the western ideals of story telling. It seems to me that when westerners make adaptations of Asian stories, everything needs to be put into an American perspective or reference Western things to be understood. I'd really rather not do that at all. Just tell the story the way it was meant to be told. You can be the designer? ;) Maybe I'll start working on this...

yeah I'm a monkey, and I love "Journey to the West" et al I have an old illustrated copy of "Monkey Subdues The White Bone Demon" drawn by Chao Hung-pen and Chien Hsiao-tai that's spectacularly drawn, anything evoking that myth is cool with me, well done!
