Hi, Im a basic user of max 5 and I had a few questions:

a. ive seen a lot of stuff on HDRI, is this possible with max5? if so, how?

b. ive also seen lots of things on Mental Ray, but only for max 6. as i look, when i go to properties of an object, one of the tabs is named 'mental ray'. This tab's contents are usually grayed out... is there a way to use mental ray and max 5?

c. is there a way to enable max 5 to automatically start with a viewport configuration the same every time? i always have to switch it when i start up (i switch to the one with the top, left and front viewports on the left and on the right is perspective and it's big)

Thank you in advance,

LP

I would think saving the UI scheme over top of the original "DefaultUI.ui" file would do it.

[Edit]
That was directed tward your last question.

yea i tried that but it didnt work, wish it would let you change the startup viewport config.... its probably really complex, but imma keep trying to figure it out.

a. Splutterfish (http://www.splutterfish.com/) got a free plug-in for importing HDRI images...
Find it HERE (http://www.splutterfish.com/sf/sf_gen_page.php3?page=plugins)

c. Configure the viewports the way you like, and then save the file as maxstart.max (When you start MAX it will automatically load up this file)

Oh, I also had one more question i was trying to figure out last night. In most tutorials, when they show pictures of their models in the viewport, i can see the white lines that outline each side, its like wireframe only you can see the actual model's properties (ie: color, shading etc). I was wondering what i would have to do to make it so i could be able to see said lines on my models.

thanks in advance,
LP

It's ok, I just found that out today myself. I have only been working in 3D applications for 2 weeks now. I bought the 3Ds Max Bible and have been watching the VTM's over at www.3dbuzz.com . So it's a n00b helping out another n00b. :)

If you want anymore help or want to offer me help we could work together on learning this stuff, hit me up with a PM and I will shoot you my MSN info.

The maxstart.max needs to be saved in your %max5Folder%\Scenes
