View Full Version : Self Portrait first attempt

For my first attempt at digital painting I thought I would try doing a self portrait. I was amazed at how quickly it came together, just a couple of hours. I'm used to a couple of days for something like this as I normally work in 3D.

I did it all in painter and only used the default Smeary Palette Knife. I hadn't used painter before and after this I think I will be using it a lot :)

By the way a good tip for doing self portraits is to use two mirrors, that way you can be looking at one while seeing the reflection in the other. This means you can see yourself looking in a different direction.

This isn't finished yet but I don't want to make it look too polished as I like the painterly style... Feel free to nit pick, this was meant purely as a learning experience for me and so any advice would be great.

Cheers

First attempt, huh? Yoiks, thas nice.

I don't see any point in trying to critique, because A: I don't have a have a handle on portraiture myself, B: No Painter experience, and C: It's an awesome first try that contains the promise of some most-excellent future works.

Very Sweet man very sweet. I noticed that the ear has a red line that goes down you might want to blend that in a that would just be amazing for the first attempt. You should keep up with the painting you sure made my first attempts worthless. Awesome work......

Really good for a first attempt. Good volume and form using your lights and shadows. It really has good depth and wieght. Now, we won't know how accurate you got to the likeness without seeing a photo of you, but as far as anatomically I can't find any faults in it at all.

The hair and shirt seem under developed compared to the work done on the face though. I'd finish those areas up and call this one "complete." Excellent work!

Thanks for all you're kind comments. Kirt, I know what you mean about the shirt it's quite rough compared with the rest of it. I don't want to over work it though.

I think I am going to try doing some sort of fantasy scene next. One thing I've got to work on is my style, my work has always been a little generic and I need to add something that distinguishes it as my own.

1st attempt?
The face is so realistic...Front page material no doubt.
But work on the ear more.

Nicely done, I like it! You say this is first attempt? It took me close to 5 attempts to get the self-portrait I liked. Now it hamgs on the wall over at someone I don't know's house.

I say Marvelous!!! Keep on going!
