View Full Version : ALIENWARE: The artists

Dear CGNetwork Artists,

With the cooperation of CGNetworks, artists were given the mission to create a 3D rendered image of an alien world that is uninhabited yet feels ‘alive’. Alienware received over 3800 entries for the Alienware CG Challenge! We were impressed by the professional and inspirational concepts that were created for this competition. Choosing a winner among these amazing concepts will be difficult.

While Alienware was developing the MJ-12 digital content creation workstation, our goal was to design a system that maximizes the capabilities of 3D animation and visual effects applications. This effort earned the MJ-12 certifications from Discreet and Softimage for its graphics and rendering capabilities. After looking at all of the launch options for this system, Alienware determined that the CGNetworks community was the perfect destination because of its connection to some of the best CG artists in the world.

The last three months have been exciting for both CGNetworks and Alienware, we have watched concept sketches evolve into breathtaking rendered finals. I would like to congratulate you all on the hard work that has been dedicated to this contest.

Thank you for making the Alienware CG Challenge a success. For more information regarding Alienware workstations, please visit www.alienware.com/workstations_dcc.aspx

Wish you all the best,

Alberto Arias

I looked through all the final entries last night after the FTP closed at the end of the competition, and I've got to say that I am very happy with the final turnout!

There are some amazing entries, a lot of hard work and some very excited artists!

Voting will be opening shortly. Congratulations to everyone that participated, especially those that managed to finish

This challenge has had one of the highest numbers of completed entries out of all the challenges that we have run on CGTalk.

Thanks to Alienware for providing such a generous and desirable incentive for finishing, and thanks to all the artists for making this such a great and inspiring experience.

hmm better solve the problems with the final image first - mentioned in the bug issue report thread.
( "Warning: opendir(/home/httpd/vhosts/cgnetworks.com/httpdocs/../web_users/challenge3): failed to open dir: Permission denied in /home/httpd/vhosts/cgnetworks.com/httpdocs/alienware/final_image.php on line 298

You have not yet submitted a final image for judging!" )

anyways, nice challenge, I hope the error is only web-based...

Well, good luck to all. I feel really bad that I didn't get an entry in, but my scene got corrupted. Its not like it could have competed with anything here. :)

chrish
01-21-2004, 07:46 PM
bummer, have you tryed to import it into a fresh scene, sometimes this helps, also ive noticed lost of scene files get currupted when your settings for saving scenes are set to compression, always disable compression in any 3d package,

I am glad you all liked the contest; It was something we were very excited about.

We get to empower an artist with a very powerful system. Another result of this contest is sure to be that a lot of other companies will be following our footsteps; this will bring a lot of exciting things to your community.

My humble thanks to CGNetworks and AlienWare for organizing this gargantuan challenge!

It has been fun indeed, and very educational. I never made an image this size before (4000x5473) and I really pushed my CPU and graphics card limits to the max..."hint, hint" ;-)
I really liked working on something of my own, within a context.
Maybe I'll use the idea for my students as well...

I can honestly say this has been educational for us as well. I am truly in awe of what has been produced by you guys and the camaraderie I have witnessed.
Regarding that MJ12, it will be delivered in due time, what a lucky one that person will be.

I'm so sad i didn't manage to finish it on time!!! For my first paticipation on a challenge like that i feel like crap... Only few sketches in three month!!!

Anyway... I promiss that i'll go through the end of it, even if it takes me a life time to finish it!!!

And next one i'll complete the whole thing in time... About that... When is the next one? And what's gonna be the subject??? Can't wait!!!

Good luck to all of you who manage to finish all the steps in time... I've been following all of you guys and there're some really amazing wip indeed, and absolutly nice final images... :applause: double :applause: I already got my favourites!!! Again good luck guys!!! See you for next one...

I agree with everyone. This has been the greatest turnout I have ever seen in any community, and I dont mean just on the WWW. So much work went into this, from everyone, the Alienware Corp., CgTalk, and of course, all the great artists. And just as this contest was ending, Cgtalk was awarded 1 million posts. What a great last few weeks.

I want to thank everyone who has helped me out, my girlfriend, my parents, my fellow cgtalkers, and of course the mods and the fine people at Alienware who came up with such an incredible event. Thank you to everyone, and best of luck.

It's been a lot of fun, I've learnt heaps and made some new friends in the process. I think CG Challenge stands out as being a much better competition that others, becuase you can watch the works evolve and get feedback as you go. Many thanks to CG Network, and Alienware for making it possible.

I think I feel like everyone else. Although I drained my creative energy for a while, had problemes with my 3D software crashing because it couldn't handle my memory demands, I finished the competition. I could probably improve it a little but what I am so glad is that its the first finished project I ever did. I`m just a hobbyist 3D artist and let me tell you it was alot of fun.

This was my first challenge as well and I really enjoyed it! I had a great time watching the daily progress of some very tallented artists.
Ive wanted to enter one of these challenges for a while now, but most seemed to last only one month. The 3 month length of this challenge was just perfect even for someone working more than a fulltime job...like me. I think it set everyone on a very level playing field.
Many thanks to all the sponsors as well as CGTalk for making this possible. I cant wait for the next one!

WOW!

What a roller coaster ride its been!!!

This has been a truely AMAZING contest, with some outstanding work submitted!
I am amazed at the level of commitment and dedication, not only from the artists about there own art, but also from helping other artists (in effect 'the enemy) in getting there images up to scratch! To see the 'veteran' artists helping ppl who have just become involved in 3D art is amazing-and it would never happen anywhere else but at CGTALK.

Thanks CGTALK and ALIENWARE! I hope that this will not be the last collaboration between you guys!

I want to second the comments made by Pyke, I really enjoyed the input and critiques provided by other members on the site, you have a real sense of commaraderie here. I personally heard about the contest with a little more than a week in the competition, so I went like gang busters, had a couple sick days (cough cough) and completed what I could to finish the contest. In the short time I was participating, I recieved many an encouraging words.

I haven't really participated on this forum before, I am admin at a small CG site/forum and outside of it and work I have never been lucky enough to join in all the fun you people have here! It was a pleasure to participate in a contest with so many talented and enthusiastic artist. Thanks CGTalk and Alienware for creating such an inspiring environment for me to enjoy and participate in ;)

Congratulations everyone, there are some amazing pieces of art, and even those of us who don't win, should feel proud at our accomplishments.

Throughout the challenge there was a healthy level of competition while never losing the spirit of comradery that this great community has. I for one am highly impressed with the level of art that has been achieved, all the way up from the grass roots of our first concept sketches to some truly amazing finished pieces. It's great to see what a professionally run and well collaborated event can be. I look forward to another mergence of ALIENWARE CG Networks and the artists of it's community to showcase what can be achieved when the industry bands together.

I must say that was the most creative and outstanding challenge of ever ... thanks for the all CGNetwork crew for this great event.

One of the best think of this challenge was the truly espirit of all artists envolved, great skills and anwsome pieces of art ... i must say that i'm impressed with all works ... and most important of all was the espirit of community ... we reach the end of this challenge with lots of efforts, but that wasn't possible without the words, crits and help of all friends that i made in this challenge.

thank u for all .... and good luck

Thanks for pushing me to a new level of understanding...and pain:surprised

I've already used this image as a portfolio piece to try and get some new work! Couldn't have done it without you. I have an idea for the next competition: Let the entrants submit scenarios and then vote for the best one after a week or so and go with that one......A thought that occurred to me as I was coming up with 3 or 4 more ideas that came to mind during this competition.
Thank again to everyone involved - this is the best community on the web!

I have a bit of a twist to your idea.
There doesn't have to be $6,000 dollar prizes or anything (although it is great motivation) but we could go with a challenge that starts off with a vote and the winner decides the "theme" of the next one, and so on and so on.

Just an idea I picked up from another CG forum I look at.
It works rather well I think.

Any other thoughts to elaborate on this?

What a great contest. Had Soooo much fun it ain't funny. My wife hates me now cause there were times I hadn't payed any attention to her. I think she was putting on a little show and that she isn't really that mad at me for staying up late with the computer. Anyways a great Thanx goes out to CGTalk and Alienware for putting on a contest of this size. I have never entered any contest before and am not sure that I'll ever do (sause you know it gets me in trouble for spending too much time at it.) Oh ohh! I'm rambling again. Sorry!
