View Full Version : Another City (day time)
DSedov 06-24-2002, 10:41 PM Well ... what can I say. I through idea of a night city away and tried to explore daytime instead. Here is a little test of the buildings I finished so far. IMO it looks nicer than other cities I've done.
C&C is most welcome
Here is another update! Which of these two are better?

In your post you state that this was just a test render, but I really like the colors and the deserted feeling in the composition. Perhaps you should add some deserted items to add to that feeling (like sheets hanging from a balcony etc).
The texture on the building to the right feels really great, but it bugs me that you quite easily notice that the texture is tiled every second floor or so.
Just came home from Spider-Man and even though I thought the film was a bit too corny, I can't help thinking of the scyscraper-swosching scenes when viewing your picture...

That texture issue would be quite easily remedied by removing the "unique-ness" of the window with the objects on its sill. It occurs in that pic on the 2nd and 5th floors, 2nd in from the left.
And the one with the white square in the top left..
Maybe make another texture, just flipped horizontally...

Thank you all!!!
Im woking on more buildings now. Im tring to go for the fifth element feel now but with quite different amosphere filing and maybe diffirent transportation.
wgreenlee1 : Thanks alot! That little thingy makes me happy :applause:
Dirk_P_Ho: Yeah, I'll probably get rid of the whit squere, also there wil be some reflections in that building which will add some uniqness to individual floors. For some reason I showed this picture to non 3d people and they told me that that building looks more realistic then anything else, though it iss less finished, I think I will have to dicrease reflectivity on some of the windows.
daevid: Thanks alot. Some people told me that it feels like everyone has died in his city. So that is why it is still in progress, Im will add cars maybe some people and little details. I found that putting texture in afterFX and then doing some animation like putting some glow behind the window from TV set adds alot of realism as far as animation goes. Spider Man surely had geat CG city!!
Thanks for comments again!!!
Im finishing more buildings now so it will be a better picture pretty soon. Also I will get rid of that skyscraper in the middle and make the street longer. Also I will create the street it self, something multilevel.

I love cityscapes! Yours is looking great. I think one thing that may make it look deserted or flat is that the building on the front right is totally in darkness. Maybe try adjusting it so some light falls on it? I dunno. But it's definitely looking great!

Heh, by 'totally in darkness' I mean there's no variance in lighting, not that it's litteraly in pitch darkness. :)

Nice going, love the reflections on the building,

Looking extremely nice.. really nice quality/feel to it. I agree on the comments about repetition though, need to get some other things in there..that one 'block' of building on the left is really awesome, but need to keep it on just one or two buildings..same for the others, they look great, but you really notice that there's a lot of them around. I like the addition of the door and balcony, more stuff like that, air conditioners, odd bits would be great.
I think maybe why it feels 'dead' is that there are no people or signs of people..since you're up high that would have to be through windows, or if you have flying cars in this one too, get em in there. Some billboards, corporate signs on buildings, that kind of thing would help a lot too, break up the greyness of it.
Look forward to more :)

It would be nice you fly with a camera and save it in a video ;)

More realistic. How many poligons in total?

Very Cool Dennis, you do great work. The lighting has a cool mood, sorta like the end of AI.

i would choose another sky image for the sky. this one doesn't seem matching your great buildings.
Also, put more time on lighting. I am not a good lighter, can't help you with it , sorry:shrug:

Wow.. I didn't think I'll get that much response.. thank you guys
I've add some more pictures they are in the first post .... ohh well I'll add them here too =)
HapZungLam : Yeah I've changed some lighting now. so it looks a little more realistic, BTW I have two versions, which one is better?
telecaustic : Thank you! Also for some reason it reminds me city from Minority report, but I've changed lighting a little bit.
Treb: Thanks alot!
Sevarf2: Thanks you. Frankly there are not alot of polygons there, most of the stuff is done with textures. Upss... I just turned statistic on and it has 80K polygons, but most of them are not visible though.
pabbloz: Thank you! Im working on the flythrough now, but I will fix some textures and then bake some radiocity stuff, though I achieved pretty much the same look with some are lights, but I'd rather bake radiocity.
hypercube : thanks =) Im working on car designs now.. there will be a lot of them. Actually it is going to be a short (5 min) film, I have already finished my main actress, I just have to finish off blenshapes and some texturing on clothing I'll post her as soon as I finish the her compleatly.
hypronost: You bet I am the LW user =) I use Maya at work though, but I found Maya is not a "one-man" software, so it is easier and faster to model and texture in Lightwave!
Wigaru Wiyamoto: Thank you! I think I fixed the darkness but now other building is dark =)) Ohh well I think it is the texture that is dark.
Thanks alot guys!! you are the best

Awesome
Well Done I love it:love:
All i can suggest it that in the Pillars on the right building in top picture they tile all the way down i think if you make it abit more random it will look even more awesome!!
Keep up the great work

You should send these to Marlin studios for advertisement of their texture cds. Some crits would be the geometry in the first set of pics in the bottom left corner does not match up with the texture, along with the sky image needing to change. Not sure what you're going for but if it was for lighting and concept then it works but if you're trying to add texturing to your arsenal of digital talent then you need to make Your cd textures original.

MAN! How much is modeled and how much is texture? I know you didn't model all those little windows. Did you? wooOO?!
Nice work. Is thise for fun or is it part of a scene?

Great work. The second one is the best for me. When it's so good let's forget darkness! Why didn't you render that with maya? Not enough time? Lighting limitations?
 BEAUTIFULL

Very nice.
The clouds kinda bother me but is not a biggie (they look too smooth? too much like an airbrush maybe?).
I like the second one the best, has better contrast but that is a personal opinion... It all depends on your intentions for the image or animation.
Sometimes just because one doesn't like the image doesn't mean it will not work in the intended animation. Know what I mean?
Anyway what's your scene polycount???

really amazing DSedov! you are making a great job! and the lighter version (more realistic) is much better!
You can try to add good sun effects and maybe a fod (you know.. very contaminated air-ambience, the air is very "heavy") :)
Keep us updated!

Also like the brighter version better. I would try to change (pull in) the balconys on the third building on the right side to make it less obvious that it's the same building as the first left.
In the texture on the first right building the small darker window draws attention to the tiling of the texture.
Can't wait to see an animation, but am a bit worried about if the high contrast in the render/textures that might cause som flickering (especially thin diagonal lines) when animated. I've highlighted some areas in an enclosed image to show what I mean. Hopefully you'll be fine though...
