View Full Version : Samba dancing - Globeleza
Cadinho 01-18-2004, 02:37 PM Hi!
This is a finished TV AD we did for one of the major TV Channel here in Brasil, called TV Globo.
Valéria Valenssa is an icon of samba and carnaval here in Brasil and for 10 years she does TV ADs where she dances naked with paintings and costumes all over her body.
Last year she danced pregnant.
This year she got pregnant again!!! () and they didn't want to repeat the TV AD.
So they called us at SEAGULLSFLY (www.seagullsfly.art.br) asking us to create a virtual model of her dancing...
This is the final result of it:
http://www.seagullsfly.art.br/videos/vinheta - globeleza.zip
We also did a making of:
http://www.seagullsfly.art.br/videos/making of - globeleza.zip
We hope you all like it.
Critics are more than welcome!! ;)

I cant get the link to work, mabye the server is busy.
I can't get the link to work either - but I saw it when it was posted in the news section and is fantastic!
As I said then, it's especially nice (and rare) to see fully 3D character work come out of Max - and for it to look so splendid! :D

I had a chance to check this animation on the site. I went to SeagullsFly animation studio, to visit my friends, and checked this animation before the national tv release. I think the result is awesome. The deadline was very short, and the result is incredible for me.
I even didn't notice for some seconds that this entire girl ,after the wipe from crhome to "real like" skin, are 3D. I did not realise it, until i saw the face (that i know that's almost impossible to archieve better results in such short time of work, but it i am sure, that all the people who don't know much about Cg Graphics, will be fooled by this piece of CGI animation. :)
The Seagulls Fly Team did the job very well. And showed to the world that's possible to do character animation and complex rigs, like muscle simulation, just using WELL, ans being smart with some features of the software. :)
The shaders are impressive too. :) Cool skin, with bright colored spots, and nice unwrap.
The Making of videos is very nice too. :)
I am proud to be friend of these guys...hehehe... :)

Voces fizeram um bom trabalho!
Congratulations to the whole team that accomplished that work.. simply fantastic...
Answering some questions that I read here and I am.. the rig was made with CS and mixed Bones.. mainly for the movement of the shoulders.. the part of the breasts and buttocks.. Bones were used with lookat in a dumy and the dumy linked in a spring controler... for the that I know it was done of that sorts things out... but the involved personnel can provide better us information of as it was done....
wonderful... 100% Brazillian CG !!! :bounce:

Hi people.
First of all, thanks VERY much for the kind comments about the vignette and the making of. It was really lots of fun making the 'globeleza', but it was also a lot of hard work.
As said on the making of, 5 people worked on this project: FlavioMac (THE man for 3d... :)), Fernando Reule (me), Gabriel Loques, Fabricio Moraes and Gustavo Duval.
Fabricio Moraes modeled the body, with a help from Gustavo Duval and Gabriel painted most of the textures.
I was responsible for the rigging and a few other things (back texture of the hair, animation of the hair, UV for the 'press-circuit' theme on her body, etc).
FlavioMac made the terrific shading/lightning, the slices movement, camera cuts, composition, post production, effects, and a lot of other things.
As we were working with Motion Capture, we had to use Character Studio to load the movement (is there another way to import MC movement on 3ds without CS?).
Against our will, I must say, because it doesn´t uses the same "phisolophy" of 3ds max for animating, and we had to 're-learn' the process to rig her correctly.
About the rigging: There´s a lot of 'stretchy' bones on the shoulder and arms, and the secondary movement (of her breasts and butt) were made with bones looking at a spring-controlled dummy. The springs are very heavy to work, and hard to set it ok, but the result was very nice
We had more than 1000 frames (and a key in EVERY bloody frame! :)) and I didn´t want to keep correcting skin problems through the animation, so the rig needed to be self-funcional. After a lot of tries and mistakes (and mistakes, and mistakes :)) we get on this solution, that appears to be ok.
The "making of" was made on 2 and a half days by me and Cadinho (Ricardo Matta Filho), the one who post the first message. :)
It shows a lot of the tests and the step-by-step of the production.
Once again, thanks a lot for the comments. We´ll keep in touch.
Best regards!
Reule

The reason for the links are not working is because there is a space in the middle of the URL (sorry, my fault  ).
Try to copy and paste the WHOLE address in your address bar and it will work perfectly.
Even though you don't make it work, go to our website and enter the english version. A link you show up in the first page.
Good luck!! :p
Sorry links don't work. Seems your server is down .. maybe too many cgtalkers hammering it ;).
try to click on the Web's site link from the poster (Reule); the link works for me

I´m from brazil(Belém-PA) and I saw it in the tv from far away really fast and I thought it was the globeleza, then after seeing it again I was able to determine that it was cg by looking at her face, imagine how great it would be the face if they had had more time to work on it? but the whole thing looks awesome.
congrats to the guys at seagulsfly.
it´s great to say that it´s 100% brazilian.
-parabéns pessoal, vocês detonaram mesmo na globeleza.

Heheh...Almost 100%...The Movement was captured at "House of Moves" (california).
Unfortunatelly, we don't have yet, specialized Mocap Studios in Brazil.
I have a little question,
your rig is very complex, but how do you do to use Character Studio with your own biped and how do you assign the ligament (like for the shoulder ) with CS ??
Do you use soft body or something like that, a plug ??
Reule

>your rig is very complex, but how do you do to use Character
>Studio with your own biped and how do you assign the ligament

>Do you use soft body or something like that, a plug ??
Nope. 100% 3ds max and Character Studio. The shoulder stuff are mostly stretchy bones, with dummies linked to the biped, or a bone with position constraint to the biped link. As we were working with only one character, we didn't import or export the rigged skeleton to any other max file. And there's no animation on the extra bones, they are functional by themselves.
For the secondary movement, we used spring controller for the dummy that leads the orientation for the breast and butt. The hair animation was made "by hand"... :)
Thanks again for the comments!

Wow! Excellent work, you guys rock!
If you would please, I have one question about your rig.
Is the twist of the two max bones attached to the bipeds upper arm scripted? I notice the lower one twists with the biped, but the upper one, just right! How you doing it? could you please explain?
Thanks, I can't wait to see your next project!
Could you post a little screenshot of the envelopp for the shoulder, in order to see if and how you fit the bone in the mesh
thanks men
Reule

josiah: Is the twist of the two max bones attached to the bipeds upper arm scripted?
Well, not exactly scripted, because the biped doesn´t recognize XYZ coordinates, and it works with TCB (yikes!!). I know almost nothing about scripting, but the little I know wasn´t enough to create a functional script for the biped. The solution I found was creating a bone, setting a "position constraint" for it and setting the arm as target. Then, I´ve created a "look at" constraint for it and set the elbow as the look at target.
Then I had to set the rotation of the bone on his own axis, and I made this setting the "up node" for the look at constraint to another bones, fixed on his shoulder.
Damn! :) Quite hard to explain! :) I´ll try to record it on Camtasia...
tyio: Could you post a little screenshot of the envelopp for the shoulder, in order to see if and how you fit the bone in the mesh
Well, right now I´m on vacation (yeaaahh!! :)) but I´ll ask for somebody on Seagulls to see if they can do this.
thanks a lot for the nice comments!

Thanks Reule! You must be a really great guy to share the secrets of your terrific rig with us even while you are on vacation!
I have been pulling my hair out trying to figure this out! I hope you can elaborate more on the shoulder setup of your rig (please), after you get back from your well deserved vacation!
Thanks again for the response!

BURNING QUESTIONS!
A great example of what talent and 3dsmax can do! Amazing! Everyone I have showed it to did not realize it was a CG character and not Valéria!
A new web page at Seagullsfly explaning a little more about the making of Globeleza would be a really great addition to the movies! Perhaps some questions could be addressed like;
Was Skin or Physique used?
What renderer was used?
How was the lighting setup done (HDRI?)?
And especially, HOW did you make such realistic looking skin!?
Again, super fantastic work by the Seagullsfly team!
Thanks!

Hey guys good job! Love those fatty mass jiggle bones :scream:
Character Studio Biped rig I believe is what you used. Did you have to customized the shoulder controls? So the muscles deform realistically when the shoulders rotate. Or is it an included feature on the latest version?
For mocap cleanup. Could you share what app you used to clean it or did you hire a service bureau to do it for you?
Thanks for sharing the clips.
