It's surely not a bad think trying to be good or let's say to know something about all those methodes. But it will depend on you I think ... Those methods differ from each other, and I think it would be good if you first give them all a try and when you think that ones workflow matches you right then first choose this and try to handle that well at first. Later on if you are still willing you can still look at the other ones. But first make a decision and choose the one which seems to be good for you.

In maya .. i learn poly/nurbs/subdiv all at once ... cos all 3 have different approach on making an object, like when u want to make a vase, the easiest way is using curve and nurbs, but for spaceships, im more into polys, and for organic object such as hands .. subdiv is da best.

If you are completely new to Maya I'd suggest checking out the FREE VTMs (Video Training Modules) at www.3dbuzz.com to get yourself familiar with the Maya user interface and what each of the tools are as well as how to use them. Then pick a few things laying around your house and look for basic shapes that make up more complex objects. Then try and model them. That should get your feet wet and give you a pretty good understanding of which modeling style you prefer.

yeah I am learning Maya as well. I started with Max first but I like the way Maya works better and I also understand it easier.
For me I am trying to model a guitar. Its not going that well but I have started from scratch a couple of times already and tried using different methods. For me, every project I undertake I am going to use the tool that best suits the job. There is a reason there are different methods in my mind. Sure it would be great to get to know all of them but I think its best to just start and play around. If you are modelling something and it isn't going well for you, think about using another method.
Good luck
