Thanks for all the feedback - I agree with a lot of your comments.
At the outset he was to be more cartoony - in some ways I still prefer this look (texture development still):

The textures and lighting do need to be refined. Some of the creases were developed
from photographs of elephants' skin which I used together with hand painted creases and images.
The lighting does need adjusting to bring the background and foreground together.
This was a fairly quick piece of work and I think with with more time I can improve it...
