View Full Version : Smoothing polygonal borders

This is sort of a newbie question (I am a newbie, figures...:)):

How can I work on the smoothing information, like the "Smooth" modifier in max does?

Here's my problem: I started modeling in Max and imported the model in Maya. I wanted to add some folds in the area of the trousers; so I extruded some polygons, as you can see in the image. But the borders of them are hard...
How can I turn them into soft smoothed edges without adding more polygons?

Another thing: Is there something like the "Chamfer edge" function in Max.

Now I know, why some Maya users think Max users are idiots... ;)

I think you'll find what you're looking for under Edit Polygons/Normals/Soften Harden. The greater the value (0min 360max) the smoother it will appear.

You're fast! :) Thank you!

Yes, the tools for modifying normals in Maya are just killer when compared to the MAX ones, avarage normals would propably work too for your problem.

Could you tell more about this chamfer tool? Like what it does... it sounds familiar in some way, so it could be just named differently.

think maya's bevel is the chamfer equiv, but its not too healthy at the moment, got some major arse bug stick in its gullet. split loops and similar instead, what i did anyway, hardly touch bevel ..but if it got well and came to play happily with the others id use it more i guess.
