Thanks Osirus!
Yeah it does take time...but then you could be surfing during work, or watch TV in the evenings. I use that time for 3D now....besides, It doesn't take too long if you get some help like we have in our Shirowproject team. When everyone is fired up things get done pretty fast. The problem is geting people to stick with it. ;)
PS: it also takes less time if you aren't going for 100% accurate recreations, as you may have noticed by comparing our models with the reference image. :)

Needs work, but here's a test with crater #3 mesh. I need to figure out an efficient/repeatable way to add the deep cracks that should be spreading out from the crater hole.

Hey Hellwolve.... Yeah, it's true, needs more something:-)...
This collab project is forcing us to wear many different hats- stretching in some areas . I have to say though, I think we are batting a pretty high average of home runs. Often we excede what I was hoping for at first. Hopefully we can keep it up. :)

IMHO, that something would be a larger range of blues, a bit more 'sparkle', and a slightly different shape. At the moment, it looks a lot like hamerd metal.

is a very interesting project, i've seen some of available movies and the rendering, of course....
i have only 3 critics to report
1- some materials does not look like as the should. the flyer looks more concrete than metal, maybe cause is not on direct light, but i think u can back on working on shader, won't you?
2- some textures seem to be direcly from standard matlib, and this is a shame... the cockpit seat looks rusted instead than fabric or something else more realistic for a comfortable chair...
3- some bump maps look undersized than necessary, in the tunnel rendering dof cannot fake the low resolution. i think supersample relative material is not a right solution, u should paint it again at higher res.
keep on working, i want to see briareos model b4 than possible

Thanks for the input. Mostly think I understood what you wrote...and I have to agree with some of your crits. Most of the shortfalls come from the fact tht There is a lot of work to do and only a few of us doing it, we are discovering that for us it is best to keep moving and do whatever it takes make it look "pretty good".
There's no way this production is going to be perfect. I'm not even sure how it will turn out in the end.
As for your suggestion for hirez image maps...I'm no texturing pro for sure (rusty leather proves that :-), but I need to keep it fairly trim.... the scenes we are working on are huge. In the end I think where we miss the mark of frontpage level work, we are going to have a look that will be distinct to our teams work, not perfect, but still visually appealing on some level.
I don't remember using many preset textures unless it was part of a WIP that was not done yet ...and as for Briareos...some day...some day....;-)
Thanks again!

This was originally meant to be a way to build a team that would create a short CG clip. But we also receive invites from MOD teams that would like to have us work with them, so some type of a game export could also happen...I would really love to have an HL2 realtime walkthrough :) ...
The project does sometimes seems to have gone out of control and grown into a behemoth that will never be finished...at the moment things seem to be coming together for us and we are on track towards the final animations!
I have to add that this would never have come as far as it has without the Collaborative section here at CGTalk. We have found some of the best guys I could imagine working with, and that has kept things going through the tough moments that would likely have caused a one man project to fold.
If you knew what a lazy LW'r I am then you would see how these renders would never have happened without our team. Others on the team were timid about joining in because they were intimidated by all the SUPER LEVEL images we all drool over in the forums...But these guys did join and have gained massive ability ... some are now specializing in things like MotionBuilder character animation. < They even tutor the rest of our team on how to do characterization and animate!
The #1 best way to improve is to keep motivated since that will keep you working at improving....I highly suggest that anyone who wants to move ahead in 3D...JOIN A TEAM AND CONTRIBUTE!!
Thanks guys!
thats amazing and thats an amazing project as well.
i'd love to join but i don't have enough experience with many programs other than SolidWorks. unless someone wants a super detailed NURBS object i'd be glad to help out but not many people do. but this site is a way better resource than a book you really learn a lot.
softdistortion
05-01-2004, 12:55 PM
ILS- Not too familiar with Solidworks but I think you can export .DXF which should be readable by other 3d SW.... You may need to do some tinkering to get files to work, but I'm sure you could help out with someone's project. Our team is not in dire need of modelling help right now, If you like LOTR I might suggest a fellow collab team that is doing an amazing version of Minas Tirith (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=126092) buildings...They might be in need of extra modellors who are good at detailed work!
Don't worry about what software you use...just try to get in there and have some fun :)

Solid Works exports .iges (nurbs) , .stl and .vrml files thats not my main concern the main concern is the amount of polygons you get which is to be honest a lot. i'm doing a project (http://www.angelfire.com/ak5/ils/flying_apparatus_design.htm) right now that involves the transfer of these files to 3dsmax. i realy like the texture on the builings on the last update, what do you use to make those.?

05-02-2004, 12:02 PM
ahhhh....poly count....that is an issue we have also have had with some of the models received from other SW. Still workable though;-)
The textures do seem to be improving a bit as I do each structure. I am using Lightwave for the renders.

Love the work you have done with the buildings.
My only crit is that you should use photos of real life clouds for your backgrounds.
Right now that clouds are to jarring with the great work you are doing with the buildings.

RobertoOrtiz-
I admire your work, especially on the radio telescope you did recently! ...so, I really value your comment, Thanks! ....
The clouds could admittedly be better...I think I used them because i don't have any really good, original, render quality sky domes...and also cause I'm fond of this skytracer setting since it's my own. :-)
I also am anticipating some more texture quality/continuity issues later on in our animation. I will probably have to dumbdown the buildings to make them fit with our other items.

Hey Hellwolve :) That's true, but you are one of a few who bother to comment even when we do post. Most don't know what to say I guess?
Maybe it's better to keep working than reading viewer comments anyway...
We DO appreciate positive input, Thanks for commenting!

blinxpro- Thanks, it will eventually be in a proper city environment.
Hellwolve- Already tried to be visible on some shirowish sites...got some really hard crits from guys that don't even do 3D :argh:
Also, it takes too much time to do the multi forum thing...I did spend some time to try getting us in 3DWorld... it paid off. :)
Nor sure about the Jealous thing...lots are doing better work IMO...I haven't tried to follow what I guess the general look of 3D is and I mangle the images in PS often, so maybe they really just don't know what to say...Or heaven forbid they are trying to say nothing because the have nothing good to say.
Zloup- you did too...thanks

Ah, but that doesn't mean they can't be right ;)
Many art lovers aren't painters, but they still know wich paitings they love, and what could be wrong with one of 'em.

It doesn't take that much time, if you ask me...heck, I'm at about six or seven forums :D

If I were you, I'd stop mangling right away, and never do it again. It's about your model/texture skills, not your PS skills :P

:-)...Funny you mention this, because just yesterday I figured I had to cut back or find help from the team to care for shirowproject related emails/post replies... It took me almost 3hrs to answer questions send refs etc...just doing a couple threads here at CGTALK, no serious promo in there. I was supposed to redo the Dropship landing gear...but never got to it. Maybe I'm loosing steam, but I can't imagine getting much done if I was active on six or 7 forums. :D

That's good enough for me...You're hired...we're promoting the project and team, not shirow directly...so tell me what you need to know other than what you see here and start managing the PR

Ah, it won't be that easy ;)
First and foremost: what do you expect of me? Purely promotion? E.g. going to sites: "have a look at this kick ass project!". Or answering mails too? Making 'adverts'/wallpapers? Getting other members?
Note that I could do all of that :)
Anyway, what I need anyway is contact information for all members, and who does what. Then, where I can get the newest pics.
Lastly, ofcourse I need to be 'instated' as a team member...perhaps even introduced to the rest of the crew ;)
Looking forward to cooperating with you folks :D
