I think it's new computer time for me. So I would like to know what people are using Maya on these days, and what prefference's are as to what works good. I am currently leaning toward a Dell setup. It has dual 2.0ghz P4 Xeon's, with a Nvidia Quadro Pro 900 XGL card. I will be using mostly Photoshop and Maya on it. That's about it, except maybe Softimage. How do the new P4 Xeons run? With a 400 mhz bus, they must be quick. I am currently running Maya on my Inspiron laptop, if you can believe that. My SGI 320 crapped out on me. Opinons please.....
Thanks,
Dave

if i would have one wish for free, i would wish to get my sgi back, which i worked with a while ago. even it's slower than actuall nt boxes, it's (JUST FOR ME !) much better to work with because of the OS. it was just an indigo2 (so one between Octane and O2) but it was really fast.

if someone can tell me where i can get a used one i would be very pleased :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

I am running a geforce 4 TI 4600 and I get thee same performance as a 900 xgl.....CLocked.....most of the time (the thing is the specialized drivers for certain appz ie 3d studio). the only difference between the card is a 10 OHM resistor location. wich isnt hard to move, if you really wanted to. The XGL has a slower clock to. And the gerforce it is a lot cheaper:)

I am also running dual amd 2000+ MP and the fastest ultra 160 scsi hard drive I could find
(3.6 ms seek).........And GOHOHOHOHHHOD!!!!! it is nice:)

It sure beets my old 500Mhz P3 TNT2 32MB system.

The DDR ram works great really impressed./

I don't if nvidia's graphics boards have this problem as well, but my ti4400 (and my old GTS) both have weird transparency issues. Part of the model will sometimes become transparent/dissapear and show what's behind. Also sometimes the materials won't show inthe hypdershade and all i see are greenboxes with no text.

Try mashek.com for sgi stuff. I also have an Indigo 2 with a monitor that works great if your interested.

Hi Sven!

Used SGIs? I think you should try ebay, from time to time there pop up some nice machines. ;)

Ok maybe I've just understood wrong, but GeForce 4 and the Quadro version of it (900 xgl?) have different chips, so moving the resistor does show it as a Quadro, but doesn't increase performance anymore with GF4
