Hi, have you tried the help files that come with MAX? If not, do a search on UnWrap UVW map, that's what you're looking for. Good luck!

Well, UVW Unwrap is for really for creating UVs for the model. It doesn't export a wireframe bitmap (at least not right out of the box). You could screengrab from it, but that's messy.
Two popular methods...
Texporter

PSDPathUnwrapper

i have a very nifty way of laying out my uv's. First make an editable mesh out of your mesh. Then add an editable mesh modifier on top of this. Then work at the modifier level(!) and detach all parts of your mesh logically (like for a character: the arms and legt and head) and stretch the mesh so it all fits on one plane and rearrange it the way you want the template to be.
Then add an uvwmap and make it a planer one and fit it onto the mesh, pin the uv's with uvw unwrap. open up texporter and make a bitmap out of the mesh, load it in photoshop etc.
Then delete the edit mesh modifier, the mesh snaps back into its normal position... and voila!
Hmm i guess its hard to explain after all :D.. maybe you should buy the book written by paul steed called: modeling a character in 3ds max.
He will explain it to you in a much ... better way :D
