Hello!
I posted the most recent update of this picture in the finished forum, but it didn't seem to get much response. I'd love to hear any suggestions for improvement. I don't know if it's not grabbing people's attention, because it is poorly done or just not to their tastes.
It is meant for a children's book.

Also, here's a link to the other thread, where an earlier attempt can be viewed:

C&C greatly appreciated!

From one AZ know-it-all to another. I think it's a cutie pie monster. I like the insect looking eyes, the color, and it's shine. The out of per-portioned wings, and the food in the mouth has kind of a puppy dog look with the sagging lip's (or whatever they are). I wish it were bigger, and maybe more focused so I could get a better look at it, but I like it very much. That character has potential. Good ideas, and good work.

Last second noticings: I was mistaken on the eyes. Those are spot's, but I still like it. You should try and paint over a copy with the insect eyes once if you can see what I meant. If you want to go all out add some strands of whiskers coming off those puppy dog cheeks. [it may turn out looking like a mustache :( ]
Still looks good.

[edit] I would change those chicken feet to something more like paws if you want children to fall in live with him/her.

Thats strange. Really strange. But I LIKE it! Though I do think you've got some areas that you could work on. The image looks really flat to me, I feel like the highlights on the clouds and flowers should be brighter. The light sources on the creature and the clouds look different also. I think the composition could be different too, maybe you stretch the canvas out or something. Maybe more of the terrain environment in the background?
Maybe other creatures from the herd floating in the background?

Gamoron and Frantic, thanks for the replies!

Frantic: Glad you like it!

Gamoron: Thanks for the crit. I'm going to take some of your suggestions into account when I revise it.

Sorry I took so long to reply and thanks again for feedback!

Well, I recently purchased painter 8 and have gone back and repainted over this again. I think it's improving, at least color wise. I'm trying to make the skin of the creature a bit more natural looking, as well as trying to make the picture pop.
Any crits?

I like the previous version far better. The saturated colors, imo of course, ruins the experience. Looks far cheaper now.

Especially the clouds and flowers have gone from good to bad, the creature itself remains cute at least.

Gaggle, is it just the colors you don't like? What is it about the clouds that has gone from good to bad? I had thought the rendering on the clouds was an improvement from previous versions.

I appreciate your input. I'll take your crits into consideration. Thanks!

it looks ok to me...but the first one with the saturated colors had a different effect I think...that new one is ok, but maybe too light, compared to the old one..I dont know..both are ok..iti maybe cos we can compare both. if there was only one image, we would love each.
(I do anyway)

I'm calling this done for now. I'm actually fairly pleased with how it looks now and I've got 25 more of these that I need to complete. Thanks for your feedback guys:D

Hey,
Yeah my crit was mostly aimed at the colors. The strong saturated colors is.. I guess not my thing. That's a rather flimsy explanation, hm. It's as if it reminds me of.. of.. a quickish sketch, or towards the way a child would choose colors. It reminds me of less quality. It could just be me that has those assocciations.

At the time I didn't take into account that it was for a childrens book btw, depending on the type of book I can see the appeal of having bright nice colors. It's certainly more visually intense this way.

Regarding the clouds, it's the same sort of thing, I think the new clouds has a more 'primitive'.. simple.. sort of vibe.

When looking at the image I'm strangely reminded of some of the old splashscreens on various games back many years ago. They tended to use a lot of saturated colors as well.

Anyway, congratulations on a finished picture just the same.

Gaggle, I know what you mean about the colors. I actually like the look of a limited palette myself, but I'm trying to get away from that a bit with these children's pictures.
Thanks for the feedback!
