View Full Version : Rendering time:
dickma 01-13-2004, 05:45 PM I got a 2.6 GHz machine with HT technology, Which rendering setting is faster?
1. Rendering threads set to 1, with 2 virtual cpus assigned.
2. Rendering threads set to 2, with 2 virtual cpus assigned.
3. Open 2 lightwave layouts, with both Rendering threads set to 1, and assign individual cpus and doing render simutanousely.....

Hi !
First you must understand that you STILL have only ONE CPU so don't expect miracles :). It's just "trick" which helps sometime but not near close to real 2 CPUs.
It's up to you to try. I tested (2,8GHZ + HT) with benchmark scenes and i didn't find any strict rule when it's faster to use more threads and when only one. But it seems that sometime it's faster to use one thread and other 2,4 or 8.
Just try with small renderscreen setup and test your scene 'coz all depned's about scene. Thats because some of LW functions/plugins don't support multy CPUs so it's using only one then.

I doubt you'll find more one ideal setting. When I did a test on a similar system, I saw a 2:1 increase (yes, two to one) in render speed with HT and 4 threads on. Then, I tried a really small fast to render scene, it became 1:8. Yes, it was 1/8th as fast as 1 thread. Like 8 seconds instead of 1.
I think you'll find yourself performing test renders from time to time to figure it out.
