There's truly some nice heads on these pages!

Spent 3 hours in 3DS Max 5.1 on my entry. Should have used a few seconds on correcting the forehead and a few more minutes on the ears, but ran out of time.

Let's play!
Okay, these days I have almost no free time for such a thing, but this is very interesting, so I made this while the other system was rendering a scene, about 1:30 hour of modeling, see? I'm no fast on modeling these kind of subjects, cause I lov to tweak and tweak and tweak. ;) still waaaaay to go...

If it is OK to post older models, than it`s my latest less-then-three-hour head:

http://w3.enternet.hu/matefy/AsianUpdate.jpg

If not OK, then sorry fro disturbing. Actually I`m ina run with this character: http://w3.enternet.hu/matefy/HeroHead.jpg which is also a less-then-three-hours of modelling, back in 2003.

Both done in LW, using Ikeda powertools, Dstorms edgetools.

Thanks

Hey, thanks :))) just trying to fit into the high standard presented here...

About the cheeks, well, my face is kinda like that - as it turned into a sort of self-portrait as I've looked too much into the mirror :). I guess it was making my job both easier and more complicated - I had good reference this way, but had to spend the time to tweak the features as well.

So, my cheeks are maybe not that pronounced, but still quite bony. I haven't used any photos as reference though, only the mirror, so proportions and placement might be a bit off. I'll take another look at it sometime to finish it but that'll need a different thread, I wouldn't like to go more offtopic here.

Thank you Dear Anders, I'm glad you liked it, when you like something it probably is a very good thing! :-D But comparing to what you have got here, mine really is a baby-toy. and your attention to the details is also reflected on your font size! I need a magnifier to read them in my 1600x1200 screen. :P

I have an idea about Speed-Modeling (in order to seperate its philosophy from Fast-Modeling, and its relationship to Speed-Painting), maybe in the next session I can show something explaining what I mean.

SpititWalker,
check your PM, I sent some stuff that might help a little.. I don't wanna clutter this thread to much with all my posts(maybe that's already to late? :) )

ila
hehe :D I wrote small not to interfear to much with everyones work, but if it's that hard to read for ppl with hi resolution I will stop :)
maybe I have more details in my work here, but you're face is more original than a normal head which IMO is harder to do fast!

looking forward to see what you mean by 'fast modeling' vs 'speed modeling' vs 'speed painting' *confused* :D

wow, some excellent heads there lately :buttrock:
Laa-Yosh, I'm glad you joined!
ila too!
well, now is starting the new session (
http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=116095 )
but you can still post heads here 'cause I know human head modelling is a theme on which much of us work hard (including me)... so keep posting and improving!

Shoey, I love the ecomomy of your mesh here and would very much appreciate if you could explaing your techniques in getting so much from so few... this is my goal regarding organic head creation... actually there are quite a few folks in this thread who also are doing the very basic boxy approach, thus allowing the divides to do much of the work... just have to get my head wrapped around how to cut in the details from less as in apposed to generating so many un required cutins... so yea, any tips, tuts etc from any who are proficient in these boxy matters would be a blessing for those of us who are looking to really get down with the boxy stuff... thnx in advance...

i wish i could model...:( im working on only my first head ever now and i cant model a nose. the eyes seem fine but the nose is terribly horrible. and ive been working on it for about 4 hours now and i dont have the nose done jsut the eyes :(. a few more months and/or years will help.:bounce:

Cool, just keep at it.

Use the many models in this thread to help you model the nose.

Just pay close attention to how they did it.

That's how I learned.

I saw some place on the web awhile ago witih a lot of wireframe pics of faces. this thread i think really outdoes that site i saw. this site has lots of faces, they are new, and most are great examples of proper topology. im glad this speed modeling thread is here, its a great resource for people i think.

OK OK, I kno i'm not supposed to really ask for help, but I've just started following a silo tutorial, because I like the way that silo works but this one thing is really pissing me off.

Alright, like, if I move one verticy, then like 3 more follow along, and I HATE it. I keeps messing me up, which is gonna end up making me take more than 3 hours to do this.

Is there a way around this? Sorry for posting here, but I've noticed that this is one spot that gets ALOT of attention.

thx

I love these excercises. I am still learning and these are amazingly helpful. This is what I ended up with in 3 hours. I hope to some day make models as amazingly clean as most in this thread, until then this is what I got. :)

It's all in the circles.

Just look around at all the models, and notice how most of them have circular patterns around the eyes, nose, and mouth.

Then they also follow the contour of the facial muscles.

I'm getting better with my edge loops, and my models are looking better because of it.

phlio
01-18-2004, 10:38 PM
Thx for the tips Gabe! Yea I have yet to produce a nice clean mesh and I am hoping it is just a matter of time until I get used to the shapes of the face and how to represent the muscles appropriately.

The other thing I struggle with as you can probably see from the model is how to to reduce the polys as I move around the side of the face. I end up with the uneven surfaces you see there... still, I am having fun as I go trying to figure it out. :)

here is my attempt, 1 hour and 50 minutes spent, my guess is about 30-40 minutes on the head itself and then 10-20 minutes refining the head itself and then the rest on the eyes which I still didnt manage to get right

i thought i was an ok modeller - then i discovered edge loops.
this first head was with out paying attention to edge loops -
(3 hrs last night)

this next one - i planned it a bit more and took the time to look at the awesome submissions on this thread so far,
as well as some manga pictures for reference of stye

the female - i spent a bit longer on but the difference is amazing

thank you for your inspiration, people -
awesome stuff it has helped me immensely

Gabe
01-19-2004, 05:02 AM
To practice edge loops, you could try just making a mouth, and eye, or a nose.

Just one thing, and make it look real.

Once you have a strong hold on how to make each part of the face you can work on combining them.

I had to do that for the nose and the mouth when I started learning edge loops.

also you can plan your wires out on paper so you cut out a lot of guess work.

also use some of the models here and look at them while you are working, so you know exactly what to do.

Again, that's how I learned.

Hexodam
01-19-2004, 06:04 AM
I agree with Gabe here, same way I learned though I'm still learning but I understand know what to go for when modeling.

Few things

Collect good looking wireframes, I have been collecting wireframe images for over a year, total number now is 336 images. If I'm modeling something I often just browse through the images for inspiration or just to get me hyped up and into modeling mode :)

Find modeling timelaps videos, they are in my opinion the best way to get you started. The first practice head I did was just watching one video and doing everything exactly like on the video.

Some people find it best to start with a sphere or a box to get started, but thats only if you know the basics I think. Starting with a face and then extruding the edges is in my opinion the best way to learn edge loops. Usualy I start with a single face between the eyes and then extrude edges in all the hard places, like along the profile of the head, round the mouth, the eyes, and then the line from the nose to way of the cheeks and to the chin (dont know what its called).
Then I adjust what I have so far untill I'm kinda happy and then I start filling in the blank spaces. This I belive helps you to focus on what is the most important aspects of the face so you wont get lost in adjusting something which you might think have something to do with whats odd with the head when in fact it has nothing to do with it.

Ibox, thanks for the kind words but i can't take all the credit, i learnt box modelling from Wiro's head tutorial and more often than not stick to that formula when making a human head

have a look HERE (http://www.secondreality.ch/tutorials/modelling/head.html)

Too late but...
I wanted to take part in the session called "cute creatures"... But my first idea turned to a humanoid character head. SO I post it here too :surprised

Her profile : So, she is a cute girl met on a nomad market settled on a beach. Near a stormy/noisy ocean. Her crown/headband is made of turtle scales, and she has spiraloidic shells as earrings (not to forget the sound of the ocean when she go on continent) and to preserve her chignon. Extra note : if you meet her, lets know how she is talkative and so lovely seductive. :scream:

Don't worry about topology if you are taking care about it... I know that is not good at all, but that was just to shape a face.
