CGTalk - .hdr to .map files????

I am trying to use .hdr images in MR but can't convert to .map images (tried the hdrxsi tutorials and Inside Maya 5 tutorial on imf_copy). I just get an aplication not recognized message. Any ideas?

Mental Ray doesn't seem to work with floating point .tiff either. Is there anyway of converting .hdr images to anything useful?

Also on actual practicle use of HDRI in production is it possible to just use MR to produce the HDRI specular pass (no FG/GI)... correct! i know bugger all about MR so any comments are welcome.

I forgot to ask what the difference is between image format and type (as in the imf_copy instructions).

Also i'm using WinXP and Maya 5.0.1. (and i've tried putting the .hdr image/ hdrtoxsi.exe in all different directories to no change) (help!)
