View Full Version : Ferrari + F14 = Intro
I made this short anim here (2:XX). I did it for this "Media Academy Awards" event that we have at my high school. This was the intro for it. I did it in 3 1/2 weeks(2 weeks rendering.. haha), alone, durring school so don't be too harsh.
And yes I know there is no driver( or engine, or suspention )...:annoyed: Oh! and the environment, it's crappy, I know, but i'd appreciate it if you'd take a look, thanks in advance.

with all that criticism from yourself i almost didn't want to download it :D j/k i thought it was great, those gear shifting scenes were the best, and that slo mo explosion was killer. did you win the media award ? :)

 really cooooool camera movement!!! great!
I the environment / texture / lighting would become better this could be even better. Have you seen the NFS stuff: http://www.cgchannel.com/story.php?story_id=1158&PHPSESSID=bae8cef3327824d39c842c15c72a35db

Cool avi like the Crimson Tide ST fits it perfectly, but why did the F14 try to kill the nice car....

The short is good in complessive but the city is too poor in details. Need some lights and textures.:applause:

Whooo! COOL!
Like you say yourself it has a million small flaws (loose those hexagonal lens flares please!) like the vapor trails from the plane start mysteriously mid air in some places :)
But the idea itself, the editing, the concept KEWL
Only thing is that I would have wanted those banners to mega-flutter as the plane whipped by!!
Whats funny also is I saw this battle in "real life" once, only it was between a small propeller airplane and a motorcycle, and it was about driving *back and forth six times* between some cones 100 yards apart. Was quite a show.

That was pretty impressive besides what has been said already. I think this is a perfect example of how music can really set the mood of an animation. Once the song actually kicks in you know some s**t is going down and it totally draws in your attention. I liked the slowing down during the explosion, I wish it would have been bigger though, have the car doing a flip or something.
Thanks all!
Delucubus - Thanks, I'm glad someone noticed how I used the music.
Master Zap - I know about the lens flares, they were only supposed to be in that one, pan across the street shot, but i never turned it off until later. I had the time limit so I never re-rendered. I didn't fix it initially because I rendered all those shots overnight so I never got to see the mistake until it was done.
Sevarf2 - steps for enviroment: make box with several segs, extrude in, make windows, repeat 3 times, make plane with greeble for background, then make grey. :)
vizar - how else could I tie in a cool explosion?
Milho - Thanks, I spent most of my time on shot selection
Capt.Jackass - It wasn't entered, It was just the intro. However it was nominated (?) and when the nominees came up (video clips) everyone cheered for mine, but it didn't win becasue it was never viewed by the judges, thus never entered.
hypronost - Crimson Tide, Hans Zimmer is one of the greatest composers (Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, The Rock)
wow man. thats really nice. i like the afterburn afects. they loook really good. and that missle firing was great. A+ dude. ggod job. :applause:

Yeah the slo mo explosion ROCKED
I know this is "done" but it would be hip as hell if you went back to it and made it perfect... heck you could prolly use it for some other purpouse just change the text on the signs at the end :)

yeah lovely bit o work man. I was expecting gillette mach4 or something on the end! Slowmo explosion was mint - what did u use to get it. The only thing that played with my head was the fact you broke the 180degree line. One shot had the car left to right, and the shot straight after had the car right to left. This is usually a big no no (but who am I right?) in editing but I reckon its important here with your scene being on such a straight line. maybe a shot of car coming at cam, then another shot of car moving away from cam with some subtle heat haze. some shots incorporating an almost hand held feel as if the cameraman is hanging out a lamborghini himself would enhance the camerawork no end along with a little scene whereby the car drives through a more rubbish infested area of the street spewing up paper in its wake!
just some thoughts man, but spectacular work in the timescale you had!

Kdub, great to see your work again! Top notch as usual, man I can't imagine what you're going to be doing once you graduate high school! Amazing work, I hope you'll be furthering your education in the 3d field!

Whowwwaa that's some kickass action going on there. A definite proof of how important cameraangles and storytelling is in..er..telling a story..well you know.
As everyone else says, its very nice. It could be made prettier, but it's rock-solid as it is as far as getting that feel across. Very nice action. Very nice explosion, though I wouldn't mind seeing the car more scarred. Dragging a bumber, the entire rear half all black and wrecked and smoking :)
Thanks all! I'v never made it to the second page!
gaggle - Beautiful cars should not have a scar or a dragging bumper:)
Tbonz816 - Thanks, right now thinking about being a programmer, have a bit more interest there( I am still very interested in 3d ). But 3d will be huge for me still as I plan to be a game programmer.
Soljarag - Yes, poly-modeled
Creature - Thanks :applause:
anthonymcgrath - The 180 degree bit is totally right, my brother said the same thing (he's the filmmaker of the family, going to NYU..Tisch, yada yada ) Thanks
Master Zap - cool name, yeah, but right now, I'm enjoying summer :)
Treb - Thanks, explosion took 4 comps, 933Mhz 1.8Ghz, 1.6Ghz, 1.4Ghz, 38 hours to do.:buttrock:

Umm... who's shifting the gears? The shots of the car don't show a driver....

lol wow dude. what the hell did u use too render!!!!!!!!!!!!!! btw what program did you use too make this in? oh and you can see a driver in some of the shots. i think thats a driver at least lol
Nope, no driver, as I said in my first post, just a hand. Treb, I used 3ds max 4.2, used regular scanline (:thumbsdow )

Wow, that was wicked!.
Thats all I can say, cause my knowledge of CG and Animation are still at a highschool level hehe... Maybe in a year or two I will be posting awesome stuff like that!
Utterly amazing, everything has been said already.
Still can't believe your in highschool, how long have u been doing 3d?
Oh and BTW, ara you a good analog artists, (can u draw good?).
Thanks again!
MIst - been doing 3d for about 2 years now, my drawing skills are not bad, still working with perspective though.
Xephar - Thanks. Keep doing 3d no matter what people tell you, High school can be rough on a hobby that requires a lot of time on the computer.

I have a question for you. can you explain alittle how you anamated the car in the begining, where it pulls up fast to the stop, and the body moves how it should, looks like it has shocks,
thanks
Soljarag - to have the car move I have a Forward Kinimatics setup that allows me to have complete control over the movement
It contains the outline of the body, 3 big dummys for the body movement, four wheel outlines, and four dummys for wheel turning. (I just rotate the wheel outlines for spinning the wheels)
http://www.kzone3d.com/project/carsetup.jpg
Everything is linked to the big dumby except for the wheel outlines which are linked to the wheel dummys which are in turn linked to the big dummy. The front big dummy is linked to the back big dummy which in turn is linked to the main big dummy. Conclusion everything is linked in the end to the big dummy, now how I animated it...
I simply moved the whole thing from one point to another and I made it ease in to that point. As it is easing in, I make the body ever so sligtly tilt forward with the back big dummy. One frame after it stops I make it pop up a tiny bit and then slowly go back down to its normal position over the course of about 20 frames ( about 4 for popping up). The trick is to tweak it, having complete control over movement, gives you no reason not to make it half decent, that is why I wrote so much on it's setup.
Hope this helps some, if not, post.

Having seen this thing several times I now think the weakest part in the sequence is where the plane rolls 90 degrees. I think it looks fake. It's just that with everything else being so cool, I start noticing the cool-but-not-amazing things :) So, you know, it's not horrible, but it would be the part of the animation I find the least enjoyable.
Why does it look fake? .. well, it does this perfect 90 degree roll, but continues to fly just as straight as always. I think I would like to "feel" the pilot trying to struggle to maintain the course. At least according to Jon Physics™ the wings of an aircraft aren't exactly operating at peak efficiency when they're flying through the air, rolled at 90 degrees..
So, like, next time you're animating an aircraft rolling, you can perhaps see if it makes sense to consider that :)

kdub, thanks alot for that explanation, when I get a chance ill try it on my car, its a bit more complicated than I thought, but ill see how it goes on my car, and post if I don't understand something..... Last night I rendered a short 12 second video of the camera just rotating around, and zooming in, I couldn't believe it took 14 hours!!!
Soljarag - No problem, and I feel your pain...
JoBbe - Thanks
gaggle - You are very right about the turn, In all honestly, I spent relatively very little time animating this thing because of the time limit, so bad moves like that got in.
Thanks Again.
