Hi there!

I've recently finished this image...

Just my luck, as usual...: links were good, Server gone mad... ;) Uploaded them to another server (with an ugly adv. banner... ), until my server gets back online...

..still rendering a decent, good lookin' wireframe... I'll post it when it's done, with a flat shaded+wire viewport image...

Frenkie: Hey man! Trim the patriotism! You do know, it can alwas sound like nationalism, if you force it so much, and thats a bad thing, believe me... Just keep it silent, calm, and proud. As it should be.... anyway, don't get me wrong. Your welcome, couse I know yu well.

Thekkur: Good to see you liked it that much. At the begining, it was planned to have all kinds of dices (d4, d12, d10, ec...) around, but the lack of time... always the lack of time. This is why I've put the maps and plans under the dices instead of a specific character sheet. To make the image somewhat "rule system independent..." ;)

the semi transparent materialed dice with yellow and blue color are just awesome.in fact the image quality is so good that it looks like a photo.

Amazing image... totally convincing.

As a personal preference, I'd tone down the bump on the wood table, but there is nothing there that indicates it's a CG image.

K, i don't want to sound stupid or anything..but I'd add different shapes of dice like 4 sided or 6 or 12. I know its a dumb detail but it's one of the first things I thought of (being a big DnD fan :P)

Heck, I love you went completely overboard and modelled dirt and little things like that... and those numbers on the dice! I was shocked to see they were actually maps? How the heck did you do that! .. In my everlasting quest to render photoreal, you are a real example!

Me and my flatmate just had an argument. He swore that was a photo.... then I showed him the wire renders. (which look great too, almost looks like paper/origami :p)

My only suggestion, and I really have no right to judge, but the bag doesn't quite fall right with the die that is half-in-half-out. That and/or the light that falls on the bag coming through this die seems too light/reflective.

Something around that area arouses suspicion.

But really, it's great, very nice work!! (must of taken days to render :D)

Heya, excellent image, i'm falling for this one, just reminds me of my old roleplaying days : )

Fun thing is i have a dice bag almosts like this one... just one thing, though, as already noted, there should be a lot more than just 20 sided ones, i mean, no role play ever got played with only one kind of dice...

anyhow, and apart from this, great image !

looks like a photogragh, despite the fact that the litte bag looks a bit less realistic, I mean the shape and surface is too regular and perfect compared to the texture.

Great image.

I would add a little more bounce light from the paper so the underside of the dice that are resting on the paper are not so dark. Also don't forget about the 6, 8 and 10 sided dice!

My only crit is that the dice look too new, the dice in my bag always got scuffed up and had tiny scratches from rubbing against each other all the time.

Simply beautiful - very, very convincing. The only critique I have is that the leather on the bag seems to lack thickness - other than that, this could easily pass as a photo.

Ohhhh, this brought back memories of endless nights and weekends in my buddy's basement, playing AD&D, arguing over rules and shady dice rolls, and getting totally absorbed by the campaign we were running (Ravenloft still has a special place in my imagination). Excellent image! :beer: :beer:

Wow, Actually, I never imagined, that you guys would like this piece of picture so much... It feels quite good, but i'm still searching for my breath. :)

So...
killeratti: The software was MAX 5.0, and VRay for rendering. The few textures were created in Photoshop 7, the the rest of color, diffuse, ect. controll was achieved through procedurals (gardient ramps, and noises)...
Garma: The shaders are VRay shaders, falloff maps were used to simulate fresnel (controll is more accurately) behaviors of reflections. No "specular highliths" rendered, all "light source reflection" is raytraced. For example the bag, it has a very glossy reflection all over it, with some falloff control, to enhance the scattered light alogn the edges...
tyio: Oh, yes there's a VRay for MAX 6 out now, but I haven't really got MAX 6... :)
Renzsu:You've actually spotted the wooden flakes, the small pieces of eraser, and the other ones?! Wow. Cool. Thanks...
Kood: Yep, could be, the illumination there... but the bags folt over the dice is actually wrong. A weak spot, but had no time to twek it right. I know...
Kricket: And again yep. Dices are toooo new. None om mine looks as new either, the texmaps, even the paint of the numbers are scratchless. :(

Oh, and about the variety of the dicec... Icould say, that DnD3 is almost only played with d20, and that's true. Or that I've got a bag full of d20s, as a DM's bag... :) and that's also true... But what really mattered, was the lack of time I had during the creation... In sum the whole stuff was put together in, lets say, 8-9 hours, and a couple hours tweking to get a nice render... I was finished with the othe dice types modelling, but had no time to do the texmaps for them. (Placing every number exactly as it is kinda booooring tooo...)

I've seen some pretty realistic pics on this site, but there's always one or two small things that give them away. Not this one, though. Everything, from the lighting to the textures, is just perfect. :bowdown:

awsome work!

after staring at this for an hour and telling myself its cg, i found one thing. i think the table is to rough to play on [to textured] like your pencil would go right though the paper...

...BUT

i think it adds to the scene. an old, unfinished table, a old leather pouch, old style drawings. kinda makes me think if Hobbits played D&D.

Looks great, but its too damn clean, dirty up the specular kicks in everything, especially the dice, scratches, nicks, etc. chew up the pencil, bend the corners and dis-color the paper, maybe some torn edges on your pouch...

just dirty that sucker up a bit, and its Golden, :thumbsup:

at second glance, the pouch and the pencil are what stick out the most as CG...

and little bits of eraser? those pencils dont have any, but bits of dirt/dust/grit do make for a more realistic scene, dirty it up, :scream:

Awesome texturing/lighting work in this piece...totally believable, elegant in its simplicity. My only critique would be the apparent lack of thickness of the bag, as has already been stated...

Would love some details on how you lit this...ie how many lights and did you use HDRI for the illumination(GI) and reflections?

It's totally true, that trere are many faults, and mistakes in the image, but this was how far my talents let me go this time. Maybe next time, couse most of the crits I've got here were some aspects I've already was awere of...
Like the roughness of the table. In the earlier stage, as a WIP, aomeone else mentioned that, and couldn't believe that my table is actually *that* rough! :) But it is. So this is why the roughness was kept that way, and to mask the low resolution of the wood texture... :p

Nothing will ever be perfect, even if it's gets as close to perfectness, as it can, will be the distance infinite. But this what drives us, makes us create. So as I think...

But really, thanks for the comments. Doubt that I will ever change this one, but next time,...

So, a bit about the lights: The main illumination sourceces are 2 area lights, set according to the secondary ambient illuminator, a HDRI image, to match the reflection environment. Also, bright white planes were used to enhance the "specular blooms". The GI was calculated in two passes, a raytraced one to get GI from the HDRI ambient, and a photon mapped one, for the lights. (Also, that was calculated latr as a hybrid). Nothing much. Thats all.
Also, it seems that I've forgot to set up a "refraction" environment... :(

And if anyone of you actually wiped the dust off from the old books, or borrowed som form friends... got yourself a DM, or wrote a new adventure to trawel with (an sometimes kill...) the players to semewhere fantastic... Well, then, it really worth making this picture. Thanks. This is the real award.

Wow! That is a great image. Brings back lots of memories. :)

For one, I like the wood as it is. It looks like a piece of unfinished plywood that a group is using as a makeshift table. My only criticism is that I think the pouch leather should be a bit thicker- but overall very nice. Could be a gaming magazine cover- do they still print Dragon magazine?

Teruchan : No, can't do that. I haven't got a bag like this, different color, and has no metal decoration..., and I've also lost my green dice. Sigh. Must have got into someone elses dice collection at the end of the last play, happens a lot... :) But it would be kinda funny to actually photograph a similar scene.

XsifoX and others: Yes, it deems I didn't matched the thickness right. It has, but it's just half the thickness of my real bag. It's only a solidify modifier on top of everything, so with a klick it can be solved.

Slackjaw10 : Don't know. :D I've did my end of the deal. :) Seriously: Heck, if if's nat that good, well, than it's isn't... its that simple.

Don't exactley know, if this is a reasonable rendering time, but it was rendered in abot 5 hours with an irradiance map calculation,... taht took up almost 2 form the 5, and than another 3 for the bucket rendering....

Hardwer was: p4 2000@2600 1GB RAM (400MHz), I think this is all, that matters. :)

The bag (as far as I know... :D) has only 3 different texture maps. One for diffuse, a map of a leather surface. A bump map, same as the diffuse, but desaturated, and "range separated" with a levels command. To give it some roughness, a diffusion map was applied, it was the picture of a rusted metal, but I think it did the job well... The other parts were done with procedurals, mostly noise maps. (and falloff maps, but just for reflection contorling)

It looks so real - and yet too 'real' to be real, absolutely fantastic. Like one of those photos that have such true, gorgeous colours that it looks out of this world.

Being an old roleplayer myself, I'm all too happy to see this. It's so beautiful.

I just can’t believe that it is 3-D. I would like to see some wire-frames, just for my own pessimistic look on life. Until then, nice photograph.

Very realistic... but why only 20 sided dices? Reality is made of variety. Uniformity is an easier way to model, but it results in a rather boring image...

Your technical knowledge is quite good, so add more creativity...

Well...to tell the truth, After modelling the d20's I got quite bored,... :) Wanted to do some variety, lol, it was even the main concept, to modell a set of dice (not to do this image), but folks seeing the WIP said: "Hey, quite nice, why don't ya modell some environment, or a scene? " So, I've endeed up tweking lightning, drawing pictures, modelling tiny decoration on leather bags... :) And got quite bored and tired all the way, so, I think, this is why the other type o' dice are missing. :) Not if it were more than a couple minutes to do one, just, I don't wanna, it's finished... Idunno... :) Like the thickness of the bag. I'ts just a solidify mod, so, to add more thickness, I would only need to spin a spinner, but somehow,... :)



Maybe next time. :)

P.S.: wires are uploaded! Just read back a few pages.

what king of shadows do you use? is too realistic, and would i know haw do you make the paper texture?

The scene was fully "raytraced", so shadows are raytraced shadows. To light things up I've used a HDRI image as an ambient (the well known kitchen.hdr, :o) However, it was kinda "new" fab when this image was rendered, so I can say, that this was my first glance at HDR technology :o) ) to get some nice colors, and some key lights (actually, matched to the HDR image environment) to get sharper shadows, and faster caustics.

The paper has a procedural bumpmap, a combination of several noise procedural shaders, and a diffuse color shader (a bitmap). Thats all. Some noise on the surface is modelled.

One question: How did you make that perfect wires? Did you do it with and edge-plug-in, or how?

Hey, thanks man, but chill! This thread is now in the "CG Choice Gallery", so, like all the other pictures in there, it ahs been on the front page for a while, and I've got my Award for it. But all this was a really long, long time ago.

All the modelling was done with MAX's built in tools, actually nothing fancy at all. ( Actually there's nothing special at all about this pic, but ppl like it for some odd reason. :) )

Can't possibly express how stunning the render is. So simple and yet so impressive. However, your highres links are dead and your website doesn't seem to work, and I'm dying to put this on my dual display :D .
