View Full Version : Scene: the Stolen Voice
darkefire 01-11-2004, 06:57 AM this started off as a strictly digital painting, until it turned into a strict digital pain when i realized i didnt have the control over the stylus i needed.
i ended up redoing each element on a separate sketchbook page in charcoal, and then compositing and colorizing the whole thing in photoshop.
im not sure if i've done too much "post production" on it (like contrast and DOF blurring), or if i havent done enough.....
personally i think i could have done a better job lighting the whole thing, but i was looking for a couple opinions on the composition of the piece as a whole, too.

It lacks focus....all the tones are too close to one another; even with the guy pointing at the throne, it's really busy and hard to tell what's going on. I'd also say it's pretty static too because it's so symmetrical overall, and is seen straight-on and more or less at eye level.
To push the idea of perspective, you need to exaggerate the relative sizes of the characters - that'll help the space read more clearly.
Make some adjustments and you're on your way....

thanks! that's the kind of insight i've been looking for. you're right, it does seem strangely all-over-the-place, and at the same time...bland. i was tryinh so hard to give each character equal space/voice in the piece, that the overall composition suffered in the end. i'll run through it a few more times.

I look forward to seeing your changes.
These types of problems are really close to me right now because I'm a character designer trying to figure out how to create convincing interiors and so I'm dealing with all kinds of the same things. Been doin' a lot of reading about composition and perspective and looking at a lot of great concept art and am seeing problems in my work, like the ones in yours.
So we're in this together, my bruthah!

hah hah! glad to hear it! i would be interested in some book titles of websites that have been keeping you on your legs. im personally still in the "see what i like and imitate it" stage of my development, so a lot of my influences are strictly visual.
