Ok here's my problem. Whenever I use a particle (which has become quite rarely because of this) Combustion goes mental.
It works fine in Medium and Draft modes, but when I try to use Best or Preview the picture just becomes either white, or black with a white square at the bottom left corner.
This happens both in the preview window and if I render a movie.
Here's what a rendered movie ends up looking like:

Any ideas to what I'm doing wrong?

This depends, is this Combustion v1 or v2

Try changing to software openGL rendering & see if that fixes the problem (I've seen a couple of similar problems like this on C2 & it was the openGL card)

I've tried both with and without Open GL. It's the same in both.

have you got the 2.1 patch from discreet??

Without this patch, C2 particles are useless!!
